Those rules were designed to be done outside of the event, actually. The event allows for neat things like glossing over the hard work and summarizing it into a montage. When it comes to working on the drone itself as a side project, it's meant to be a little side project for people to work on if they're looking to improve on their drone incrementally. That said, it does look a bit on the extreme end of grindy.

I'll tinker with them a little to make it less of a chore.

Improving a drone!

Drone enthusiasts are known to spend a great deal of time on their custom drone. While inferior to most models found in military use by the Great Clans, drone enthusiast have accepted that their creation is custom built by them and every improvement is tailor-made to their needs. With enough work, a drone might even excel beyond those in common circulation. However, this requires a great amount of commitment and sometimes working on a single custom drone might even take years before it reaches its intended form and use.

From here on out, drones are improved with the XP system but have an XP pool useable only for either machinery or programming.

To raise its machine XP for raising traits, the drone enthusiast must roll Engineering/Intelligence to TN of 20 to gain 1 XP.
To raise its programming XP for raising skills, the drone enthusiast must roll Computer (Programming)/Intelligence to TN of 20 to gain 1 XP.
When it comes to making either an Engineering/Intelligence or Computer (Programming)/Intelligence in this way, the enthusiast can call two raises and gain an additional 1 XP on a successful roll.

Drones are limited to one upgrade still, unless the body/chassis is upgraded by buying an improved frame.

A 20-86 chassis will have two upgrade slots and cost 1 koku. A 30-86 will have three upgrade slots and cost 2 koku. To transfer its machinery (traits), programming (skills) and upgrades from an existing drone to another chassis will require an Engineering/Intelligence or Engineering/Agility at TN25.

To install new upgrades will require a skill check of Engineering/Intelligence or Engineering/Agility at TN25.

The Drone enthusiast can only perform one of these rolls per day. If a roll is failed, their day's efforts are considered lost and they may try again the next day.

Since there are a few game rules involving Lore:Underworld rolls, I thought this might be relevant enough to ask for everyone:

Lore: Underworld "is considered a low skill." Is it universally dishonorable to use (e.g. for gathering information in the bad part of town or getting in to the Desolation), or is it one of those low skills for which honor loss is more situational?

Does Crafty (roll unskilled Low Skill checks as if you had one skill rank) encompass it?

When it comes to rolling Lore: Underworld or low skills when it comes to the informational meta game of Shadow War, we're ruling it that it will not incur honour loss for a dishonourable use of the skill.

And yes, Crafty will provide Lore: Underworld.

I guess they should also be associated with a specific day among the three making each session, just for the purpose of Void point management?

Don't require dedicated timeslot, but require dedicated day and time of day for purposes of Void point management.

More Heist Questions! (After rereading the heist rules, and rereading gm questions to try to avoid burning gm bandwidth on things already answered.)

Forged Identification papers: You have to call at least one raise to obtain forged id papers. Am I correct in assuming that if you call two raises on forged ID papers, that the papers are 'better' in a heist, and not just they took a really nice picture of me for the photo?

Preparation: Are there penalties for failing to prepare, other than not getting the free raise?

How do free raises from work with the false/stolen papers route? The rules just say present papers going in and going out for inspection. Preperation rules say you get free raises for entering/exiting.

Locating a terminal: Rules say raises on this roll help with exiting, wanted to check how this worked also with the false/stolen papers route.

If you call a raise on Locating a terminal, and fail the roll, does this mean that you both cannot gather info AND take maximum suspicion on leaving as you spent a bunch of time flubbing about for a terminal?

On one hand, this might expedite the "hobbiness" of the drone beyond what I envisioned and on another, cooperation is nice. But I believe there is an L5R mechanic already for cooperation that allows for adding the skill to the roll (page 81 of the core).

So, without reinventing the wheel, I think I'll go with that method. You can't roll twice with two different people on the same drone but you can have help from one or more people for that one roll per day.
