(OOC: Oof! Took me longer than I had expected, but back! Sorry for the delay, hoping to prod things along more steadily tomorrow!)

The Soshi GeneBioTech building
After you cross the now barren, dust-covered garden and walk through an area where part of the building's façade has caved in and a first lobby completely filled with debris and rubble, making even moving about burdensome, you find the entrance to the laboratory proper in a surprisingly good state... comparatively. Stepping inside, you see pieces of plasteel, metal and bricks scattered through the floor alongside charred pieces of what must have been paperwork, electronics and other of the usual things one might expect in an inside reception of a corporate office.

Spooky Surroundings
Before you can take a better look at the precincts, however, you hear low, grim moans and whispers. Some of the lights, off a moment ago, flicker before turning on, and, at the corner of your eyes, you think you see some sort of shadow move across parts of the fallen ceiling and books near the wall opposite where you're standing before disappearing, apparently into a wall.

Image

It might be enough to send shivers down your spines. But, given where you are, you feel in your guts it may not be the weirdest thing you’ll see today…

As you try to keep your calm, roll vs Fear 1 (Raw Willpower + Honour vs TN 10).
General rules for the scene
Tic, Tac, Tot
As your first uncanny encounters quickly reminds you, staying put for too long in the Desolation may prove dangerous, as you start to attract the attention of unnatural beings in the area. While it does look like the inside of the building should keep you safer relatively to the outside, this is still not an area where you'd probably like to spend a long time.

As you search through the ruins of the laboratory, you will spend Time Steps representing the time spent doing each activity. As you accumulate Time Steps from your activities, you may end up attracting the attention of one of spirits or other things roaming the area.

As you will have heard from others who have visited the area, some of the spirits around are relatively harmless, while others may be quite dangerous.

Fear outside combat
Some of the situations you may encounter as you explore (like the one described above) will call for a Fear roll (Raw Willpower + Honour vs a TN of 5 + (5 x Fear Rank)). Many of these situations (like this first one) will happen outside combat, so the rules for when Fear wears off are a bit different here.

If you are affected by a Fear effect, you suffer a -Xk0 penalty to all your dice rolls, where X is the Fear Rank, as normal. This penalty decreases by -1k0 for each 10 Time Steps the group spends performing activities.

If you are affected by another Fear effect while still under the effect of one, you only suffer the highest penalty (i.e. the effects do not stack), and each effect has its own duration reduced separately.

Keeping things moving
To keep things organised, for most of this scene, each PC should declare his or her action, then wait for all other PCs to act before going again.

I'll usually react to what you have done and say if you attract anything weird after each round ends. Please feel free to ping me when the last PC in a round acts so I prod things along!

If at any point one of the PCs does not act for over 2-4 hours, even after I ping you, I will use the instructions you left (taking into consideration what the others PCs in the team suggest, but within what your instructions say) and ghost your PC accordingly. Again, as things come up, I encourage you to update your ghosting instructions to do specific things if you feel that will help!
After that inauspicious welcome, you can finally take a better look at...

Part 1 - The Reception
Image

As would be expected, most of what must have been the lab’s Reception is in shambles. Parts of the ceiling, bricks and other rubble lie all over, and over a desk you see broken glass and twisted black plastic pieces of what must have been a computer. What must have been doors to side rooms or corridors, or maybe restrooms, is now completely blocked by the rubble. Two parts of the room, however, draw your eyes.

At the left side, where rocks, debris and a variety of other items cover most of the ground, you see, behind a desk crumbled to the ground, some bookshelves and a cabinet still standing.

At the rightmost part of the opposite wall, you see a corridor that, while partially blocked by fallen plasteel, plaster and other materials as parts of the ceiling and walls caved in, seems to be the easiest way to proceed further inside the building.

Each PC may choose to take one of the following actions on their turn.
  • Searching bookshelves and cabinets - This requires 2 Time Steps per attempt and an Investigation (Search)/Perception roll (TN unknown!). Calling Raises may allow you to find more valuable information. The same PC may try again in a later round, but this uses 4 Time Slots instead (unless they have Investigation 3, in which case they can reroll once in a later round using only 2 Time Slots again).
  • Proceed through caved-in corridor - Roll Athletics/Agility vs TN 20. If you succeed, you make your way through the tunnel in 1 Time Step. Each Raise called in this roll allows you to grant a +5 bonus to the Athletics roll of another character of your choice. If you fail this roll, roll Athletics/Agility vs TN 15 again. If you succeed the second time, you go through in 2 Time Steps instead. If you fail again, you force your way through carelessly, suffering 3k1 damage and arriving at the other side in 3 Time Steps instead. Small characters gain 1 Free Raise for their rolls here, while the TNs for Large characters are increased by 5. To clarify - if you fail the Athletics roll, you can go ahead and roll again in the same post. If you want to, you can give up (i.e. come back), but then you must start the process again in the next round.
  • Help another character - If you have gone through the tunnel, in a following round you can spend 2 Time Steps to help another character of your choice who still hasn't gone through. This provides a +5 bonus to the Athletics roll of the character you choose.
  • Wait - If you decide to just wait while others do their thing, you spend 1 Time Step.
  • Do something else - If you have some other idea here that I haven't covered, explain what you are doing in your post and ping me. I'll react to it at the end of the round!

It was going to take a lot more than some spirits playing with shadows to put Dai off the task. He didn't want to be here any longer than they had to be so he uses that focus to ignore any distractions.

"Let's move quick and not linger. Keep your wits about you."

He quickly sets to looking for any surviving passkeys, visitor badges for the security system, or similar useful items within the lobby and reception area.

(Whoops starting rolling before Thimacek edited the post - thankfully Dai's plans fit the options

D7, LA: Fear 1 Check - Willpower + Honor | 2k2+1 ⇒ 22 (TN: 10)

D7, LA: Investigation/Perception - one raise called versus unknown TN | 6k3 ⇒ 34 (TN: ?)

Search with one raise beats any TN 29 or lower, 2 Time Steps spent for Dai)

Sumiko had to take a moment as she entered, the sounds around her not being what she expected. The flickering of the lights turning on didn't help!

After taking those few minutes to calm her heart, she took stock of the room. Kinda collapsed corridor? Check. Debris around? Check. Bookcase?

Oo..

Deciding that the others would likely do better at working the best way through the corridor compared to her, she went to do a quick bit of research

Sakura was not scared of any old reception! She spent countless hours in places like ths! Even the rats were smaller than in her old apartment.

While Dai and Sumiko were looking around, Sakura tried to get through the tunnels.

Emphasis on tried.

Damn cakes for breakfast.

Luckily after some more wriggling she's IN!

The Fox looked around calmly. The corridor looked difficult. He knew he would likely need some assistance, unless he could find another way through. For now, it seemed best to let others assess that route, while he joined those searching the area.

Thus far, everything appeared to be going according to keikaku. Yesugen kept her rifle drawn as she maneuvered about the reception. Though she wasn't afraid, she was cautious; periodically, she'd jump back with her firearm leveled at what she'd just opened.

Dai, Sumiko, Kiyoshi and Yesugen, together, spend a considerable time rummaging through the cabinet and bookshelves still standing. Through your combined efforts, you find a few things of notice. Details of these will be found in your PFs.

Goes further inside
Sakura, for her part, has some difficulties scrambling through the tunnel, but after some time she manages to pull through.

Part 2 - The Way Down
Image

As Sakura alights at the other side of the corridor, she finds a larger room, apparently some sort of foyer, in a similar state of disarray. Rubble and plasteel are scattered through the floor, and completely block the way to three doors. Judging by their position, two of tem probably led to internal offices. The third one, which seemed to be a larger, heavier door, was likely the emergency stairway. By the looks of it, making your way down on foot is out of the question - you would need at least one hour of work to even start to clear your way through the stairs.

At the far end of the room, however, a heavy plasteel door seems to be relatively well preserved, despite dents here and there. On the right, you see what seems to be a jack. Could it be that it might still work?...

Those still in the Reception can do the same things mentioned above:
  • Searching bookshelves and cabinets again - The same PC may try again in a later round, but this uses 4 Time Slots instead (unless they have Investigation 3, in which case they can reroll once in a later round using only 2 Time Slots again).
  • Wait - If you decide to just wait while others do their thing, you spend 1 Time Step.
  • Do something else - If you have some other idea here that I haven't covered, explain what you are doing in your post and ping me. I'll react to it at the end of the round! (This includes casting a spell, as suggested by Kiyoshi!)
Being in the Foyer, Sakura can try to do a few more things:
  • Help another character - If you have gone through the tunnel, in a following round you can spend 2 Time Steps to help another character of your choice who still hasn't gone through. This provides a +5 bonus to the Athletics roll of the character you choose.
  • Can this be hacked?... - If you have a way to plug a computer or similar equipment into the jack, you may try to access the local system and try your luck at activating the elevator - although there is little guarantee that the trip down will be reliable. Sakura doesn't have a Computer on her, so this is listed for later.
  • No way to go but down. If Sakura decides not to activate the elevator, she can choose to climb down the hard way. She will find the door is easily opened, but then you'd need a way to go down... If she really wants to, she can try to gather some makeshift equipment around and try to climb down to the B7 floor. Doing this alone and with makeshift equipment would need an Athletics/Strength or Agility check against a TN of 30. Calling Raises (!) could speed up the process. Failing, for obvious reasons, could be very dangerous.

Kiyoshi turned his attention to the narrow tunnel, assessing it again with a frown. Quickly, scanning through his densai, he soon called on the earth kami to assist him. They responded eagerly. Unfortunately, while their presence gave him greater purchase, it was still a difficult struggle to push through.

Yesugen's second traversal through the remaining documents was much less efficient. She was, after all, essentially the only one lingering behind to find more information.

At the tail end of Kiyoshi's departure, she headed over to the wall. She was meant for this, obviously; that was why she hadn't gone immediately.

Despite the increased impediment of her combat gear, she slipped through as her nimble body was meant to do. It wasn't so bad compared to crawling around a cockpit, after all.

As Sakura turns around to face the tunnel again, she hears a low, ghastly sound from somewhere. One of the lights close to her, that had oddly been turned on since their entrance, flickers again.

    Image
She is then suddenly surprised by a transluscent image hanging down from the ceiling, then twisting around to face her and letting out a low shriek!

Sakura manages to help Sumiko through regardless, but...

This time, they seem to go only for her communicator, but there are more of them.

    Image

Sakura, please include a TN 20 Reflexes check to protect your communicator along with your next roll as well!
The others may declare they are helping her do it along with their next action. Doing so will consume 1 Time Step and need a TN 10 Reflexes check. Success grants +5 to Sakura's roll.

After a while, the swarm of buzzing insects crosses a wall and disappears...

You are now all in the Elevator room, and have an ID card - in the name of one Soshi Oharu, a 40-something woman judging from the photograph in the card, who presumably worked in the laboratory.

You may take one of the following actions:
    • Can this be hacked?... - With a Portable Computer on hand, Sumiko can plug it into the jack to the right of the elevator to try to access the local system and activate the elevator. Given the state of the elevator, there is little guarantee that the trip down will be reliable, but you feel it can be done. This needs 2 Time Steps and a Use Computer (Hacking)/ Intelligence check vs TN 25. This counts as using a Low skill as normal. Calling Raises here might ensure that the Elevator is working properly - which might avoid problems!
    • I guess Soshi Ohana worked here. With the ID card in hand, you can use it on a panel besides the elevator, close to the jack. While you'll quickly find out this doesn't make the elevator work automatically as it probably did when the lab was active, doing this and accessing the network shows you are granted some user privileges. Trying to reactivate the elevator using these privileges needs 1 Time Steps and a Use Computer (Programming)/ Intelligence check vs TN 20, as you try to jam things into working again. Calling Raises here also helps ensure the Elevator is working properly.
    • No way to go but down. If can decide not to activate the elevator and climb down the hard way, working as a group and using Dai's equipment. This needs a Cooperative Skill Roll. All PCs involved roll Athletics/Strength or Agility, adding the highest skill rank among participants to the result, against a TN of 20. Each player may call Raises to speed up the process. Half the players succeeding means you successfully reach the B7 Floor without too many problems - although those who fail may still suffer some bruises. If less than half the players succeed, you won't immediately fall, but you run into some problems and hurt yourself in the process, possibly more seriously.
    • Fox-spider moves!. Still under the effect of Hands of Clay, Kiyoshi may climb down to the B7 floor effortlessly. This takes 3 Time Steps.

Sakura almost shrieked when she saw...that. Or what?

But she was made of sterner stuff. She's seen worse things in the shower after Yurei was done!

Meanwhile the blasted bugs were at it again. Thankfully Dai the chivalrous adventurer came to her rescue, and they managed to beat them off.

    "Shoo you vermin!"

She shot a smile at Dai, before moving forward. "Susumu-sama, it's an older model. You have to jam it just the right way, because it's cheap crap. Like here." She pushed one finger down on the keycard at a really odd angle, but it seemed to click, and some of the commands Sumiko were inputting went through.

    And now they waited

Never an idle body, Yesugen went to trying to block any opening the bugs could further enter.

After another rush quickly shrugged off by the plucky Firefly and her stalwart Delver Knight, Sakura again keeps both her wits and all her equipment in working order. Rushing to help Sumiko, she gets close to her just in time to see the error message that popped up in her screen.

ERROR 418. WARNING - Repeated attempts at invalid access will invalidate your Keycard.

With Sakura's help, you quickly get a CODE 212 - SUCCESS, and you soon hear whirring sounds coming from the elevator shaft. Yesugen barely has time to start her work trying to block any openings along the walls using the debris scattered about before you hear a familiar ding dong and you see the elevator stop before you.

Inside, you see buttons from B13 through 1. The elevator to the higher floors, which were severely damaged judging by what you could see from outside, was probably located in an area that's been blocked off.

With some luck, the B7 floor, where Kioku said the Rainbow Olm samples she worked on were kept, should be accessible and not blocked off.

As you get inside and press the button, the elevator's doors seem like they'll close for a moment... but stop midway through. After a while, what seems like a long while, but could be no longer than the usual wait, the elevator jolts and starts moving down...
