[D11 EE Kioku Event] Somewhere over the Rainbow

by Thimacek
As many flock to the Artificial Islands to relax after this uncomfortably hot day, quite a few, residents and visitors, make their way to the Sanctuary, where both tree cover and water keeps temperatures much milder than in the urban jungle that makes up most of the city.

As the sun starts to set, however, a number of distress calls come from the Sanctuary. Terrified visitors running towards the exit give exasperated and confused descriptions of strange creatures heading towards the Aerie. Some of the descriptions would seem to suggest beasts having escaped from their enclosures - but others mention strange, freakish things about these creatures. Running through walls. Translucent bodies. Unnatural wails.

Those who heed the call for help and make their way to the Aerie easily find witnesses reporting what the target of the creatures is: the Spiny Drake Centre. There, they will find the main lobby wrecked, two adult Drakes hurt on the ground, screeching but alive, one of the glass enclosures shattered and empty, the other cracked but standing. Most of the side doors leading to training gardens and staff-only areas are closed and locked - yelps, cries and squeals coming from obviously distraught Spiny Drakes suggesting these areas are where the staff took all the creatures they could gather to protect them - and hopefully keep safe themselves. The door on the left at the end of the lobby lies open, leading through a corridor.

From inside, those in the lobby can hear twisted, beast-like howls, and the exasperated voice of a woman.

Rules for participation
Before posting your participation, note that there is an OOC Thread to organise characters' participation. It is recommended that you check there and organise with your fellow PCs to define who will join. Those participating in the thread are welcome to use it later to coordinate during the combat as well. This thread will be considered closed after four Characters have posted in it, confirming their participation.

It should be noted that this thread has potential to be fatal and participants face a considerable risk of death.

Your initial post should include:
  • Your character’s reaction to the situation as they approach and/or enter the Spine Drake Centre.
  • Your Initiative Roll
  • Your unarmored TN to be Hit (as characters cannot normally run around the city in armour and you wouldn't have had time to arrange permission; you can have weapons with you, within reasonable limits, although you may have to explain things to magistrates later).
  • A Lore: Theology or Lore: Spirit Realms roll as you try to make sense of the situation. This will be triggered IC when you first see what the beast-like howls come from, but I'll ask you to roll it in your first post to hasten things.
Also please add general ghosting instructions, and feel free to update them as you see fit. After the participants are defined, I'll generally wait 2-3 hours when your turn comes before ghosting, except when sleeping.

Dai was already on his way to the center before the call for help was even sounded - intending to contribute what little he could towards the project to bring back the newts.

When chaos broke out his instinct, honed by Desolation, was to run... but it seemed almost everyone else was running. Which left few, if any, to help. Which meant things could go badly indeed. Which would mean his decision to follow compassion instead of greed would have been for nought.

No, he was going to help... but he wasn't going to be stupid about it.

(Dai intends to stealth up on whatever is unfolding

Kanna was in that weird spot where she knew a few things had been brought back from the Desolation but she didn't know any of the details.

And no monster is scarier than the one you know close to nothing about. Her imagination started running wild as soon as she heard the alarm, and it wasn't calming down as she strode forward the building, one hand hanging near her gun.

"Hide here." he quickly told the Detective. "Hide and wait here."

Kazumi often came to the sanctuary to relax and they had some free time so they were doing just that, walking among the pangolin tunnels enjoying the dull red light and relative darkness.

They then heard some commotion coming from the spine Drake area. With some screams and strange growls the Scorpion turned off the lights on their mask and flipped their jacket inside out to show a reversible matte black side that reduced noise and didn't reflect light. Pulling out a side arm and screwing a Silencer onto it the Scorpion melted into the shadows and converged on the disturbance.

(OOC: Good! We have our team!

Before we start for good - a Stealthy approach is possible, as is a direct one. As you enter the lobby, you don't see any people - there are two adult drakes screeching on the ground, hurt, and there are some blood splatters here and there - but no bodies, so hopefully whoever got hurt managed to walk away. Cries and squeals come from the side doors on the lobby and the right door on the far wall, all of which seem to be closed - possibly from closed from inside as staff tried to protect the drakes and visitors.

The left door at the end is open and leads through a corridor. If you approach it, you'll see a number of doors, all apparently closed as well.

The twisted, beast-like howls and the voice of a woman - who all but Kazuki will recognise as Kioku - as well as some other voices, including children, all seem to come from the far end of that corridor.

Going through the corridor, you'll bump into a desperate woman running down the corridor towards the lobby, screaming "Please! My precious Erino-chan!! I couldn't reach her! Please save her!"

About halfway through you'll see another corridor to your left, which seems to lead to yet another corridor.

To get started, I'll ask you to say where you want to position yourself along this way as combat starts. You may be anywhere along the corridor, including at its far end, or have reached the end of the other corridor to the left. We'll start from there.)

Kiyoshi paused to tend to the wounded drakes, pulling them aside and hiding them out of the way. Then he carefully rushed towards the voices, not stopping until he found them or something else.

Not stealthed, but peering into whatever is at the end of the corridor.

Footsteps Silent as they carefully made their way through the lobby gun at the ready the Soshi had an entirely different bearing than any who had met or seen them before would be familiar with, Almost militaristic in their Precision movements.

Kazumi wouldn't be trying to hide from those that seemed like no threat and would quietly head down the corridor but wouldn't stray too far from the group.

----------------------
Along the main corridor but not trying to rush ahead of the group.

The drakes seem hurt but not in any immediate risk. Stopping to tend to their wounds now would be possible, but would possibly take time.

----
OOC: If you tend to one of the Drakes, I'll say you have lost some time and haven't progressed too far in the hallway, so you're still before the corridor that goes left. If you stop to tend to both, you'll still be in the lobby when Combat starts - possible, but your choice!

If you do tend to them, I'll handwave simple wound healing on them.

This was the part that Dai always hated on delves. So many routes and access points and no way to know which ones were open, which were sealed, and which had something nasty behind them.

He speaks softly as he lets others know the rough the layout he knew about. "Multiple potential routes means we might be flanked, keep alert."

As the woman runs down the corridor he pauses briefly to nod to her, wave her to the lobby, and make sure she continues on before falling back in behind the others.

Though obviously not Scorpion trained the ronin moves with a silence that could potentially impress even a Soshi.

(Dai's taking up a rear guard position if everyone goes forward. If Kiyoshi does stop so he'll be in the lobby Dai will post up in the intersection so he can keep eyes on those going forward, the shugenja, and any potential danger coming down the straightaway

It's not so much tending to their wounds as it is making sure they're hidden/sheltered if violence comes back towards the lobby. If they look like they can move on their own, he'll leave them be for now.

The can move, but not easily - the cannot fly, but they can scamper through the ground. Should be able to reach the outside in two or three turns.

Kiyoshi briefly pauses. Seeing that the drakes should be able to escape on their own, he hurries on.

OOC: With that:
  • Kazumi will be trying to move silently along the corridor just ahead of Dai.
  • Dai is at the intersection, as he noted.
  • Kiyoshi hurries ahead (so he ends up some 5 or 10' in front of Kazumi).
  • Kanna hurries ahead, as first noted.
I'll be off to bed soon, so Kanna can decide her specific position when she wakes up.

These are your positions for now:

Image

Kiyoshi sees the start of what seems to be a laboratory... and something else. I'll wait for Kanna to post her position before that.

See ya tomorrow!)

Kanna pressed on in the direction of the cries.

Since Kiyoshi stopped to look after the drakes and the others are sneaking, I guess Kanna is at the vanguard?

As you four proceed through the corridor, Kanna and Kiyoshi, who advance in the front, see the first parts of a large room with bookshelves and desks and workstations with computers, microscopes, centrifuges and tubes, as well as quite a few tables. A laboratory - now in disarray among a terrifying scene.

Soshi Kioku is standing at the far end of the room, sidearm in hand, her face showing hints of confusion and frustration even at a distance as she keeps her back to two desks where some working materials are scattered, a few things sticking out from drawers as if something had been stored there in a rush.

At the centre of the room, a hideous sight.

There are three of them. Two look like animals.

Image
A translucent beast somewhat like a muscular hyaena, with blueish flowing ectoplasmic fur and hollow eyes letting out an uncanny light as they continuously cry tears of blood.

Image
A large, black raven-like creature with a hollow stomach that looks like charred twigs, a variety of insects glinting as they fly around it - whether to feed on its corpse-like body or to protect it is not clear. Both turn away from Kioku as they sense movement coming from the corridor, their eyes filled with beast-like hunger.

Image
The huge thing lying between them, however, can only rightfully be described as something out of a nightmare. A misshapen, twisted mass of human and animal bones, half-decayed flesh hanging from unlikely places, eyes and teeth popping out from inside bones and flesh and scattered along twirling tentacles. The whole body seems organised, if at all, as an unlikely, ever-moving spiral of broken spirits and shattered dreams.

You hear a deep, warped voice that sounds like the screams of hundred of dead mixed with howls and cawing.

"d҉e҉S҉e҉r҉T҉E҉r҉! ꌩꂦꀎ ꌗꃅꍏ꒒꒒ ꍏꌃꍏꈤꀸꂦꈤ n҉O҉n҉E҉ M҉o҉R҉e҉! n҉O҉w҉H҉E҉r҉E҉ ꓄ꂦ ꋪꀎꈤ!!! C҉o҉M҉e҉, ꌃꍟ ꂦꈤꍟ W҉i҉t҉H҉ u҉S҉! w҉E҉ ꉓꋪꍏvꍟ ʎO∩! ꉓꂦꂵꍟ ꓄ꂦ ꀎꌗ!"

The abomination then slowly turns around as well, many of its eyes looking for whatever was moving near the entrance of the room, and lets out a terrifying shriek.

When the curses of the past come to hunt you, it’s time to deal with them for good.

-------

OOC: Sounds good to me!
Your positions are below, then.

Image

Kanna is 30ft away from the Raven-like spirit, 50ft from the hyaena-like spirit and 40 ft from the abomination and 60 ft away from Kioku.

Kioku is 25 ft away from Raven, 35 ft from hyaena and 20 ft from abomination. She's in front of the two desks where the purified Dragon Newt and Rainbow Olm samples are.

Kiyoshi is 10 ft behind Kanna; Kazumi 10 ft behind Kiyoshi; and Dai 10 ft behind Kazumi

Kanna hears children whimpering to her left and right.

Lore check results
  • Kitsu Kanna and Kitsune Kiyoshi know without doubt that these creatures are Gaki-do spirits, although they seem to have a stronger tie to Ningen-do than usual. Possibly a result of an interweaving of realms caused by the Kinuran accident?
  • Kitsu Kanna and Kitsune Kiyoshi also know that, as spirits, these creatures are harder to damage with physical attacks.
  • Both Kitsu Kanna and Kitsune Kiyoshi also remember stories of similar hungry dead draining life from those they attack.
  • Kitsune Kiyoshi notices the larger abomination seems to emanate a much stronger spiritual energy than the other two, creating something like a local Rift between realms.
  • Kitsune Kiyoshi also notices the spirits seem to be drawn to Kioku, and/or something behind her. It's not unlikely she and that something is what has attracted the spirits here.
