Kanna eventually noticed the presence of the Soshi's researcher, as well as her uncharacteristic happiness, and walked toward her at a moment she wasn't dead busy with her festival responsibilities.

"Soshi-sama! You found what you were looking for then?"

That is, both some biological sample and closure.
It took her a while, between dealing with festival goers and the drakes themselves, but Kanna does find a moment to approach her as she takes a break to take a walk around.

"Kitsu-san! What a pleasure to see you here!", she answers in a cheerful tone that suggests an answer already. "The sample has been recovered - assuming that's what you mean!", she answers good-naturedly. "We... had some issues with it. But with the work we've done, I'm confident." A slightly pained half-smile follows, although it's much more peaceful than what Kanna had seen before. "It... is a strange sort of memorial, I suppose. But I trust it will bring peace, to Omoi-chan and me both." A more cheerful smile. "And, if all goes well, it will mean at least one of the World of Dreams's lifeforms will keep existing."

She gestures towards the darker parts of the sanctuary. "And Kitsu-san? Have you found what you were looking for in the World of Dreams?" A chuckle. "And in the sanctuary, for that matter?"

Kanna didn't have nearly enough information to fully understand everything, but context suggested it went as good as it could have, which was all she needed to know.

"Sincerely happy for you both."

Needless to say more. Sympathy was in the tone, the flow, not in the words themselves.

After a short silence, more casually:

"Do you know if, in the wake of the success of your own, the Scorpion plans to organize more regular, more official expeditions in the Desolation from now on? Your story has reached its bittersweet ending, but others might still be waiting for theirs.

As for my own plans... Not really, but I think it's fine. I might have taken the promises a World of Dreams a bit too literally and wasted a lot of time running after a phantasmal ideal instead of looking at the good under my nose. Working on fixing that at the moment."

"That is good to hear", she says in answer to the Kitsu's last words. "Sometimes heroes are not what we think they are, and I suppose we may end up failing to recognise them. It's good that we have those such as Kitsu-san with the wisdom to know and remedy that, ne?", she adds with a friendly nod.

"As for expeditions... I'm not sure, really. The Sanctuary has provided some support for this endeavour, as I mentioned during the meeting. But... unless I'm mistaken, it was motivated by the possibility of bringing back species that had been lost than my story". She seems thoughtful for a moment. "It is true that there must be countless others whose stories could use some sort of closure, though..."

A moment of silence as she looks around - possibly imagining how many others lost much during the accident.

"The area does bring some dangers, as well. From what we hear, there are some plans to deal with it, but given the scope of what happened..."

Instead of finishing her thought, she looks at Kanna's eyes, her head tilted slightly to the side. "Was Kitsu-san thinking of a suggestion of some sort, then? That could certainly be a breeding ground for heroes, if you think about it"

"Pretty sure I'm not the wisest, but that means I've still got potential for growth, ne?

If life was a fairy tale, when finding myself facing a true hero, my Kitsu blood would have awakened, my eyes turned gold as the ancestors descended from Yomi to show their approval. Would have made easier recognizing them for what they are.

In this reality, guess I need to use my ordinary senses and my brain instead, no matter how prone to errors they might be."

Kanna's tone was relaxed as she said that, as if she had made peace with something herself.

"As for the Desolation... Well, he comparison might be inappropriate, and is likely highly influenced by the fact there are so many unmissable Kuni in town... But the place reminds me a bit of the Kuni Wastes of old. It took literal hundred of years to the Kuni family to heal the spiritually scared land but they never gave up and eventually saw progress.

That example suggests that, while there might no grand solution to solve the issue right now, a low key but continuous effort through time, even something as slow paced as half a day of work by a few volunteers each week, might eventually manage to secure, clean, reconsecrate the land, bit after bit.

Again, comparison is not reason, and the comparison itself might be absurd. But the optimistic in me likes the idea anything can be salvaged given enough time and care."
