(D10 LM) Something about a Curse

by Utaku Yesugen
After days of trying to figure it out herself, Yesugen came to the obvious conclusion: spiritual matters required someone with more expertise than a woman who just read random pamphlets from time-to-time. Fortunately, she had a name of a Unicorn shugenja and, after much planning ahead, came to meet up for this very important discussion about these accursed cursed vials.

Should we involve Soshi Kioku? Pros and cons, pros and cons...

Yesugen would have heard the shugenja in question, one Iuchi Pakpao, was a promising pilot who was on course to join the Aether Riders before an accident happened. After the accident, she had been serving in the planet as one of many diplomats dealing with matters of limited importance.

She soon came out from one of the inside rooms to meet Yesugen, her face suggesting both that she wish she had slept more, and that she had issues to deal with that she wish she hadn't.

Regardless, she bowed to the Utaku friendly and relatively casually. "Utaku-san. Good morning. I've heard there was something you wished to discuss?"

"I'm honored that you have answered my request," Yesugen said, coupled with a polite bow. "I pray that you have read my report." Much of it had been the basics of going to some research lab on the planet (with express permission from a Soshi!) and how she'd happened upon some samples. "I still am in possession of the samples. While I had hoped perhaps that I could hold onto the curses until my return to service, I've been led to believe that isn't the wisest course of action..."

"I have. I'm not sure I understand the details, but from what you mentioned... it is possible keeping hold of the samples while they're cursed may pose some type of danger.". She falls quiet for a moment, her head tilts to one side and she purses her lips.

"Have you done any research on them? Any specifics on this curse. Then, pointing to the general direction of the rooms. "Or... do you have them here?

"They are currently resting in my rooms." Yesugen nodded. "I have done some cursory looks." She pressed her lips together. "But I'm at a loss thus far. Much of it I could do but... I believe we need to beseech the kami."

Pakpao nods, in a businesslike way. "With what you described about the area where they were found? Likely."

She takes her Densai out and swipes at it until she finds a copy of Yesugen's report. "Have you started working on it yet? She gestures towards a table. "We might as well get some work done. Better safe than sorry with these curses".

OOC:
We'd need one Time Slot per sample at least, assuming we break the curse in one go. You have two, right?
If you've got another Time Slot free, Pakpao could help some more later. Or part of this may be left for D11... and you hold onto a cursed sample until it's done.

Yesugen had brought back three total, though one had gone back into the custody of Soshi Kioku. The weird crying lady had really wanted it. Is that part of her keikaku? It seemed genuine...

"I have been told it is best not to taunt the forces that be." She had done so, of course, at the lab by being extremely uncaring until her nerves got the better of her. "Where should we begin?"

"We should have passable equipment here, I suppose." She opens something else on her Densai, looks at it thoughtfully. "Assuming we won't need next-gen equipment".

A dry laugh.

"I'd suggest claiming a table here. Or a spot on the ground. Unless Utaku-san would rather do this in your room, for privacy or some other reason. Might be too cozy though", she adds with a wry grin. It's more or less obvious she means cramped.

Regardless of the Iuchi's intentions, Yesugen wouldn't have been too fussed by the phrasing. "There's no need for privacy. This is a matter which affects our clan." She held up one of the samples with a pensive smile. "Insight into Scorpion research? By all accounts, this appears to be legitimate. A ghost seldom lies about its grief, yes?"

"Is it a Scorpion ghost?", she asks with a sardonic chuckle. "Jokes aside - no, in my experience at least, ghosts are not known for lying about their suffering. She looks at Yesugen somewhat curious as she walks to one of the tables around. "Have they... mentioned anything that seemed important, now you mention?

"Well... let's get to work, then. I suppose I'll be handling the spiritual side of things, yes?"

She gets her Densai and, with a sigh, starts swiping at it. When the ritual itself starts... the work seems to be much more complicated than she had expected, and she feels a type of resistance coming from the sample, wearing her down.

"This... I feel as if it's biting at me", she says, visibly tired but also cross at... whatever that curse was. "Damn!"

OOC:
Getting rolls out of the way - feel free to roll Yesugen's as well! She'll be doing Lore: Biology, yeah? Also - which sample are we dealing with first, Deepblack Silk or Jellyfish? I'll consider this first roll affects whichever sample you want so we can get this done with.

Lore: Theology/ Intelligence vs Sample (to be determined by Yesugen). Needs cumulative TN 50. Voided. Exhausted if below TN 15 | 6k4 ⇒ 11 (TN: 15) Oof, sakkaku

"The ghost was also a child. I imagine the practice of lying couldn't have been so instilled to counteract that innocence." Yesugen pressed her lips together. "Lots of threats of death. One threw a chair at me. But the child wanted one of us to record her to send a message to her mother."

Yesugen took the sample off of the shugenja's hands. After a lot of staring, she too became confounded by what exactly they were doing. What WERE they even doing this for, really?

"Hm... Hm... Hm..."

"A child, huh? Was it her mother who asked you and the others to fetch the samples, then? That... could be suspicious, I suppose. Or it could not. She lets out another sigh. "The Scorpion are hard to read, at times. Even after two years here. But... a chair? Those are some angry ghosts, it seems, she says with a humourless chuckle.

Then, looking at Yesugen's work on the ritual. "No luck? Looks like I should have booked my day for you, eh?, she says with another chuckle.

Whether you referred to the samples or Yesugen is unclear.

OOC:
These rolls XD
Well, 21/50 done... it's something!

"Her mother, yes. She only requested one sample." Yesugen closed her eyes and hung her head. "While I would have loved to have returned it to the clan too, I had given my word to retrieve it for her. At the very least, I suspect that the project was of sentimental value due to association with her daughter."

As for the Iuchi's comment, once again, Yesugen remained nonplussed. "These are difficult samples. I don't have many notes to refer to so it's all hypothesis for the time-being..."

"Hm. I see. You have confirmed she won't be using the other sample against us, at least, yes? A grin. Working on a scorpion planet for two years had apparently made her distrustful. Not hard to understand, really.

"I suppose we'll need new hypotheses, then. But I could use some coffee before we take this up again. Or tea. Could use company too, you're up for it.", she adds with a grin. "I heard you're normally a pilot, eh?"

Yesugen pressed her lips together. "I don't think I had an explicit oath, no," she said, doubt in her voice; it seemed unlikely that such a thing would even matter coming from a Scorpion.

"Yes you have heard correctly. I don't think I would be a good Utaku if I hadn't earned my wings."

"Hm. Well, you said this was most likely something personal. Even the Scorpion have feelings, ne?", she says somewhat mockingly.

"And well, you're right. I suppose a Utaku wouldn't do otherwise unless their wings were clipped"

The whole talk might have a bit of a personal tone, but it wasn't clear why.

"Well. I'll grab a bite and something to drink before we meet again. You coming?"

"Of course they have feelings. They're not the Spider," Yesugen said with a small smile. It remained as she thought about her place in the family. "Didn't keep my family from teaching me a bit about riding. Perhaps it would be more enjoyable than flying... who knows, really?"

She thought on the offer and then shrugged. "That would not be so bad, though I have already eaten." And she wasn't the best conversational partner.
