Wtih Dai and Sakura working together on the Display using Soshi Ohana's credentials, they quickly find out the necessary commands to inactivate the turrets and wrestle them in regardless of the system freezing and misbehaving now and then. In less than a minute, the lights under all three cameras go still, and you notice a low hum that probably came from them stopping.
The other three quickly take the cue and move to the desks and benches.
Part 4 - Find the Sample
On the workstations that were used by the researchers, the mess caused by the incident is mixed with the unmistakable signs of the past life that happened here - half-charred notebooks with some unimportant notes that can still be read, some personal items in unlocked drawers, a doll, still with the price tag, probably be a gift which never reached the child of one of the researchers who were here on that fateful day.
At each of the benches, you find a variety of small tubes, some of which seem to still contain some material. Inside the drawers you'll find other tubes, notebooks and a variety of laboratory materials. If you try the computers which are on top of some of the desks, you'll find they boot up and seem to be working. Now it’s a matter of finding out
which of the samples is the one you’re after.
Sumiko is the first to start working on them. The computer boots up, she manages to bypass the user password. The computer is not in the best working conditions, freezing from time to time, and she finds that anything other than personal things of minor importance is behind stronger protection. It will take some work getting to that...
As the others get to the benches, you may:
- Peruse one of the computers to look for information - This requires 4 Time Steps, as the computer's conditions are not the best and it freezes from time to time. This needs a Use Computer (Hacking) TN 25; Raises can help you find more information. If the person taking this action is holding Soshi Ohana's credentials, they find some information in the card can help here, granting 1 Free Raise. New attempts by the same PC require 6 Time Steps each. If you have Use Computer 3, you can try again once spending only 4 Time Steps instead. This can be done as a Cooperative roll, with only one PC rolling and the others granting a bonus equal to their combined Skill Ranks to the roll (this is affected by Use Computer 5). For Time Steps, this counts as all the PCs cooperating in the task taking this action (thus 4 or 6 Time Steps each, depending on whether they've taken this action before).
- Can I use Soshi Ohana's credentials?... - Instead of hacking through the system, you can try to use Soshi Ohana's credentials to access the information. You'll find she wasn't a researcher of this specific sector, so you'll still need to ask for additional user privileges and do some more creative programming to access some things. This likewise requires 4 Time Steps, but you can make a Use Computer (Programming) TN 20, may call raises. New attempts require 4 Time Steps each.
- Establish a direct link with a Computer in the lab, then hack for information - This requires a Portable Computer, and is what Sumiko has tried. If the person taking this action is holding Soshi Ohana's credentials, they find some information in the card can help here, granting 1 Free Raise. This action requires 2 Time Steps instead, although the base TN is 30. Raises can help you find more information. New attempts require 4 Time Steps each. If you have Use Computer 3, you can try again once spending only 2 Time Steps instead. This can be done as part of a Cooperative roll with other PCs Perusing the computers (which takes longer), although the base TN regardless of who rolls is the highest 30 (instead of TN 25). Only one PC rolls, and the others grant a bonus equal to their combined Skill Ranks to the roll (this is affected by Use Computer 5).
- Attempt to find a sample - If you want to look for a specific sample (e.g. the Rainbow Olm sample!), tell me which sample you're looking for, and you can attempt to locate it among the desks. This takes 2 Time Slots. To do so, make a Lore: Biology roll vs TN 30. You can replace this with a Lore: Theology roll vs TN 35 or a Lore: Spirit Realms roll vs TN 40, as genetic work is often tied to theological or spiritual matters. After you do so, please also roll a Fear 1 check... and another Lore: Biology, Lore: Theology or Lore: Spirit Realms roll, as things will happen...
NOTES:
Utaku Yesugen took 2 steps to reach the benches as well!
I'll try to keep things moving each 1:30 hours at most today so we can get this done with! Please keep ghosting notes for what you'd do here if you can. Thanks!
TO CLARIFY - Looking for information in the Computer doesn't automatically give you the samples. It may help, though! To actually find samples, you need to choose that option and make the Lore: Bio, Lore: Theology or Lore: Spirit Realms rolls. You can fluff that as either finding a physical sample or its information in the computer, but the roll is the same
