[Tassu]

Yogo Masafuni, an elderly lord magistrate approaching retirement, is organizing a fête to flaunt his wealth and impress Bayushi Fumie, whose daughter Aiko would be a perfect match for his son. Fumie is well known for the small entertainment empire she runs at the 68th mercantile district, owning several bath houses and no fewer than three fully licensed geisha houses. In hopes of impressing Fumie, Masafuni has rented the entirety of Purple Orchid for the night, the keiko, maiko and geisha in attendance entertaining the guests with song, dance and polite discussion. As one might expect, sake is flowing freely and as the hour draws late, some of the diplomats and business magnates in attendance get careless, their secrets ripe for the picking for those cunning and devious enough. Perhaps curiously, many of the esteemed guests in attendance are known for having lost the favor of their daimyo under unusual circumstances. The rumormongers insist that the lord magistrate has invited these disgraced samurai to spite their lords, though none can quite surmise why such an esteemed character would do something like that.

Purple orchid is known for its cozy interior, with dimmed lamps glowing in warm purples and oranges creating a magical, yet oddly welcoming mood. The lighting has been designed to cast long shadows, allowing the staff to appear from 'thin air', each entertainer taught to walk quietly on the ancient wooden floor. Needless to say, such arrangements make it rather hard to know with whom one might be talking, especially if one is not intimately familiar with the many mon of the local Scorpion.

Magic: Magic is not allowed unless character rolls contested Agility / Stealth (Spellcasting) against the crowds and officials. Emphasis is needed to make the roll and only spells that last at least for an hour can be employed. Needless to say, getting caught has consequences. Soshi Shugenja school technique can be used to bypass this restriction.

Ronin: This is a high society event. Ronin cannot take part as Yogo Masafuni is known to treat his dogs better than the few ronin working for him.

50 Shades of Entertainment
In order to remain calm and focused amidst all the pandemonium of the extravagant fête, the characters must roll Willpower against TN 25. Characters may add their Honor to this roll as if they were resisting Temptation. Characters with Lechery roll against TN 30 instead. Character with Failure of Bushido: Honor cannot add their Honor to this roll. Notably this roll also triggers Balance and Irreproachable Advantages. Should character succeed, they suffer no ill effects, focused on the task at hand. Should character fail this roll, they suffer -1 penalty to their Awareness and Perception for the duration of the event, distracted as they are by the riot of colors, dancers, musicians and no small amounts of sake served to anyone found with an empty cup.

Coat of many colors
With most guests wearing ostentatious kimono, a riot of color more rule than an exception, it's somewhat hard to tell the high and mighty from their assistants and lackeys. Character may roll Lore: Heraldry (Scorpion mon) / Intelligence or Investigation (Notice) /Perception against TN 20 to recognize the most influential and controversial guests, many of whom have existing grudges with their daimyo. Success and each successful Raise called grants the character a Free Raise when rolling for 'Careless Whisper'. Notably this roll triggers Precise Memory Advantage. Characters with Blind or Poor Eyesight Disadvantage roll against TN 25 instead.


Careless Whisper
Mingling with the disgraced lords, character may roll Courtier / Awareness or Temptation / Awareness against TN 25 to pry their secrets. Success and each two successful Raises called grants the character's faction an Information point. Characters with Insensitive come off abrasive and roll against TN 30 instead. Rolls are considered to be Social Skill Rolls made against Samurai characters and count as Rolls Contested meaning that techniques and advantages referring to Contested Rolls apply (Including, but not limited to Heart of Vengeance: Scorpion and Bayushi Courtier Rank 1). Should character succeed with this roll, they may roll exactly once again, success and each two successful Raises called granting the character's faction an additional Information point. Any Free Raises gained from 'Coat of Many Colors' do not apply to this second roll.

[Kitsu Kanna]

Oh. My. Kami. Scorpions that were dishonorable by Scorpion standards. Kanna had been almost surprised, when she had pushed back the wandering hand of one them, that their skin didn't burn like charcoal against the flame of her own honor.

Well, what wasn't working on a physical level kinda was on a spiritual one. These walking mockeries of what a samurai should be had been enjoying the warm comfort of the mire for so long that they were quite ill-prepared to deal with someone who refused to play their little games. It's one thing to act smug in front of an audience of your equally complacent peers, it's another to look at the inferno in the eyes of your conversation partner and keep your lies straight.

[Asahina Hinata]

Hinata hadn't employed the Kakita secret weapon stochastic couturier machine for this one, having leant it's skills to the Firefly, so he was merely in an exquisite quality powder blue outfit. The top was slashed off the shoulder leaving his left arm bare while the right was long sleeved with a frills. The pants went down to mid calf which left his ankles mostly bare with the flat silken slippers he wore.

He was immediately handed a drink on arriving and the local Scorpions hovered waiting to see how entertaining he would be this time. Of all things it was the floor that distracted him. Each board making a different sound had the Crane totally mesmerised for some time.

"Oh this is cool!! Maybe I can play a tune if I find the right steps . . . "

Eventually he remembered he was at a party and mingled with people instead of floorboards. Did the know anyone of the alleged naughty Skerps present? Not a chance. We're lucky he remembered the clan colours. On gaining secrets however . . . the Scorpions talked without hiding anything around him, thinking he'd never remember it. But he did . . .

[Kuni Koyuki]

As was her ken, Koyuki manages rather well keeping her calm in this stressful environment. Despite the state that this idea of searching out Moriko has put her in, learning to trust again if she can ever truly manage that, and to even barely open up to friends put her in it was in this element that she was calmest. In a vacuum, safety, that was where the thoughts plagued her. All of the unknowns that she couldn't possibly know, the constant worry that'd she'd missed some detail of a threat that wasn't ever really there and the ceaseless worrying at things she couldn't possibly have to contend with or soothe. In this place she had obstacles that could take her focus away and plan around, in here she had control that comforting environments didn't bring her.

Unfortunately, with all the effort in the world she could not have found worse luck. Or perhaps she was just losing her touch a bit. Picking up onto a particular bit of conversation, the way of the attire and all suggesting a certain kind of upperclass individual with passion enough to spout out almost anything Koyuki found her target. Despite the woman's strange accent they spent a good deal speaking of all the dinner's they've had with some of the most illustrious individuals of society. Offering a surprising amount of detail from these encounters to actually suggest these truly happened.

Eventually setting up their great scheme they had planned, and how they'd approached such names as Bayushi Mineichi, Bayushi Fumie, and now Yogo Masafuni. One of their most exciting encounters came from a merchant patron who was said to have taken quite a fond liking to her after their dinner and even invited her back to an apartment where they whispered sweet nothings to one another until the light of day returned. It took too long for Koyuki to realize that these stories were overblown, and while each of these meetings did indeed happen the individual was resoundly cast away as her ideas of "this new investment idea I have" were bland at best and utterly useless at worst. Something about a temple in a jungle with an eye, and if they'd only invested in her trip out to that jungle planet she could return with some of the purest diamonds anyone has ever seen.

Yuji was a man used to such fêtes. Centering himself, he didn't have to rely on such a pithy thing like honor. Shourido supplanted that. His own strength and determination carried him through.

[Susumu Yakumo]

Impeccably dressed in an ensemble that combined her Spider aesthetics with hints of her Crane training, Yakumo of course made an appearance at this gathering.

She did her best, but her mind was easily distracted tonight from what she was supposed to be doing - she waffled between drinking and refraining from drinking out of concern to not get drunk, and the Princess of Twilight was just too busy thinking of other things to manage picking up anything of interest as she found herself mentally leaping towards conversations that mentioned Bayushi Mineichi, Kaede, spirits, ghosts, or anything else that reminded her of what she had learn in the span of a day and a half.

[Hotaru Tsuyo]

Tsuyo's usual long grey vest was perfect for catching and reflecting the rich hues of the lighting in the dim space. She'd been to the Orchid once before, for some shindig of Ayame's, but it hadn't been quite this busy. The geisha were at the top of their game and somehow Tsuyo was in a conversation about the new teas this season and comparing them to some of the fine sake; which wasn't a thing she'd ever thought about before.

She did find it strange that she didn't seem to recognize most of the locals invited. After a year here and the usual rounds of parties, and openings, and plays, and so on and on...she thought she had at least a passing acquaintance with most of the folks who'd be important enough to come. Maybe magistrates just moved in different enough circles?

Still, conversation was flowing, and Tsuyo managed to learn a thing or two other than sake and tea pairings.

[Hotaru Katsutoshi]

Having been feeling unwell for the past few days Katsutoshi was a little overwhelmed by the crowded space full of Scorpions appearing from out of nowhere. Nervously he walked the rooms and did his best to join in with important conversations.

Amazingly he spotted a friendly Scorpion governor with an unusual mon that he recognized from the fantasy Flight tournament. It was a spot of good luck and he was able to pick up some useful details without getting too out of his depth.

He stuck around as long as he could, but that was all he managed to glean. Still, not a total loss!

Osamu likes to play disaffected, but with this many potential disgraced targets to squeeze information from? He can't help but drink it in.

And drink.

A lot.

Even with his gills stuffed with booze, Osamu can still pick out the heraldry, doing his best to place the mon to a scandal he has heard of.

Normally, this sounds like an absolute recipe for disaster, a reason why Osamu himself may soon become shunned. But little by little, he works, positioning himself as one who will listen to the "true story". He manages to pull a few useful, possibly confirmable stories.

[Usagi Rei]

How had he been living here for three years and still not gotten a head for this? Once more Rei found himself overwhelmed by sights and sounds, by whispered words in dark corners. Clearly this was something he needed to work on. Or not, as the case may be.

After all, he had learned to compensate for it to some degree. Despite his disorientation, Rei's eyes were still sharp. He could pick up the details in the people he spoke to, enough to discern their real identities, something where experience came in. After all, he knew more Scorpion than most.

And so he made his way around the room, picking up a piece here and a piece there, a small fish in a big pond...

[Hotaru Sakura]

Sakura, the dame of debauchery, heron of hedonism, the....woman recently committed to a monogamous relationship, entered the scene. Despite teh gloomy set up, she enjoyed herself, amused by all the flitter-flatter around the guests. Yes, the geisha and oiran were pretty and charming and etc...but she spent the first few years of her life at such an establishment. She had a good idea of the backdrop of it all. Besides, none of them were as pretty as Yurei.

There were a lot of different samurai in attendance, and of course, everyone was wearing a mon of black o nred, or red on black, with a pincer, or a stinger, or a stinger with a pincer at the end. For some lesser minds this could be confusing, but Sakura' past in roninhood did actually give a good idea on who's who. It pays to know if Bayushi Jiro is the one who will feed you to the dogs, or Bayushi Jirai, after all.

Her mingling was impeccable as always, as she tittered while others tattled, and listening to snatched tidbits of scandalous trivia armed her with quite the arsenal of petty secrets.

[Akodo Reki]

Honor is my shield.

Reki stepped into the riot of sound, movement, and color with nary a break in her calm. She moved through the crowd with no discernable cracks in her mental fortress.

Unfortunately she was proving to be not as perceptive as she was honorable, and ends up lost in the crowd anyway.

Fate seemed to have some hand to play for Reki, as she found herself among the right people. The Lion Gunso was a surprisingly charming young woman when she wished to be and managed to pry a few secrets from carless lips.

The Fox yawned. So many parties and all so late in the evening. The lateness was understandable, but after so many celebrations of implied vice, it was all getting a bit tiresome. Why not a picnic or something?

He meandered through the crowd, greeting those he knew and acknowledging those he didn't. A few people of some interest drew his attention, Holoproducers looked the same in every clan. He smiled and nodded when they spotted him. He feigned interest when they talked about the ratings of their shows and the popularity of various Shosuro actors. He even laughed when they joked about minor clan budgets.
