[D6 LA] Side Event: Realm Expo

Posted: Sun Apr 17, 2022 6:08 am
by Tassu
The origins of Realm Expo began with Asahina Hinata, who was a renowned expert in the research of spirit realms and their ties to the various planets found in the galaxy. He would hold an annual conference on the World of Dreams as a venue to attract like-minded individuals in the field from around the galaxy and different clans. The conference would last a few days, featuring seminars and conferences where experts in the field would present their findings to spark discussion and grow their reputation.

After a few years, as his children neared their graduation age, Hinata began to take. His daughter, who would become Asahina Ryoko after her gempukku, was immensely bored with the convention and often found herself loitering the lobby throughout the day to work on her creative pursuits. In the subsequent Realm Expo, she would use the venue to set up a booth where she would present her artistic interpretations of the realms on canvas and personally-designed clothing articles. Hinata and his associates were quick to overlook the stand but Ryoko was able to attract attention with passersby, many of whick had no interest in the expo, to begin with.

From Asahina Ryoko's stand, the creative and entertainment aspect of the convention would continue to grow and eclipse the foundations laid out by her father. Much of the academic crowd would slowly distance themselves from the popular affair, becoming a smaller portion of the convention. It would be her marriage into the Shosuro family that would perhaps cement the annual event in the World of Dreams and Realm Expo would become a convention celebrating artistic visions inspired by the many spiritual realms beyond Ningen-Do. Presently, the expo serves as both parts celebration and amusement, inviting attendees from all over the galaxy to experience the creative interpretation of the spirit realms with bits of education sprinkled along the way.

This will be the 34th annual Realm Expo.

Magic: Magic is allowed.

Traverse the Realms
Realm Expo has long grown from a few conference rooms and a lone stand, becoming a full-blown convention. Each section of the convention is separated by realms, each often hosting its own multitude of stands and exhibits dedicated to their realm. While it is possible to see all of the realms in their entirety, it is perhaps more difficult to experience each offering in its entirety in one visit. Attendees will have to plan their day accordingly and select up to three realms to participate in.

During their time in the realms, each attendee is given a 'passport' where they are able to log their participation. These accumulated and earned passport stamps will be translated into Realm Points, which will measure each attendee's ultimate standing in all of the spirit realms. At the end of their journey, attendees will be evaluated for their participation and their worthiness to earn an exclusive plushie of Realm Expo's mascot, Fuyuki the Fox!

Chikushudo - Realm of Animals
Chikushudo is depicted as a realm with a pleasant woodlands landscape, made possible by potted trees and rolled-out turf to make the realm a very real illusion for visitors passing by. The lighting here is as warm and vivid as natural sunlight to give it a bright disposition. Animals from the local menagerie also make an appearance here, meandering freely as they roam the space alongside their human guests. The experts have made sure that the animals are mostly herbivores and won't pose a risk to the guests, or each other.

At the centre of the area, attendees will find perhaps the only civilized structure within an open clearing in the artificial forest, a small traditional temple dedicated to Inari. Many of the roaming animals will congregate in this area as there are is plentiful of feed littered about for them to feast on. There is an acting trope dressed as fable kitsune which seems to be performing the custom of a traditional wedding where two grooms are being wed. In order to observe the wedding, guests will need to either remain hidden or manage the animals so that the proceedings aren't interrupted. This will either require an Animal Handling/Awareness check at TN15 or a Stealth (Sneaking)/Agility check at TN20. A successful roll will earn 1 Realm Point with an additional Realm Point for each successful Raise called.

Gaki-Do - Realm of the Hungry Dead
The realm of Gaki-Do is represented in a desolate landscape surrounding a dilapidated and crumbling feudal kyuden. The ground is made of dried earth with uneven patches that might make for tripping hazards for the careless. Temperatures here have been turned down to make it chilly with wind generators piped in to create the occasional gusts for effect. The lighting here is tinges of yellow and red to create an eerie experience alongside the droning soundtrack of moans coming from the hungry dead.

The landscape isn't the only thing that's hostile to visitors here, as the realm packs several surprises designed to scare any attendees who attempt to make their way through the area. There are holographic projections of hungry ghosts, engineered contraptions, and the occasional costumed volunteer who lurk in the shadows. Ultimately, all of these are mostly harmless but will test the resolve of each attendee depending on which one path they take. Each attendee chooses one of the following paths and makes a Fear check, determined by the path.
  • Courtyard - The courtyard is the most scenic and the longest path around the kyuden. There are perhaps more dangers found in the uneven terrain and the bits of foam rubble that may be found strewed about in a haphazard manner. Most of the ghosts are preoccupied inside the kyuden but there are some who roam around with the sharp gusts of wind. If a visitor isn't too careful, they might find themselves encountering one of the hungry dead. Each attendee here makes a check against Fear 2 (TN15). On success, they will earn 1 Realm Point.
  • Halls - The attendee may choose to go inside the haunted kyuden and through its halls. Many ghosts lurk in the shadows, often giving some hints of their presence to notch up tensions before making their appearance just when visitors think they are safe. Each attendee here makes a check against Fear 3 (TN20). On success, they will earn 2 Realm Points.
  • Inner Sanctum - The quickest way through this area would be going through the kyuden and into the inner sanctum where the courtroom is found. Unfortunately, this is where all of the hungry ghosts are found in great numbers and they are hungry to feast on the visitors. The ghosts found here will be relentless and will haunt the visitors at every chance they get. Anyone who passes through here unscathed will be highly respected. The attendee makes a check against Fear 5 (TN30). On success, they will earn 4 Realm Points
Ultimately, all scares here are fabricated, so any failed Fear Rolls won't have a lasting effect on most of the visitors for the rest of the event. If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Gaki-Do and fails, however, these scares will persist for the rest of the scene.

Jigoku - Realm of Evil
The Realm of Evil is interpreted as a narrow, cramped, and claustrophobia-inducing rock cavern whose path seems to twist in a spiral toward the centre of the room. Along their journey toward a certain direction, visitors will see both projected and costumed oni standing on the sidelines to welcome them to a sort of hell. The oni will also be seemingly operating various torture implements. While these have no obvious victims, the constant wailing filling the rooms does a lot to paint a horrendous picture in the imagination. The room constantly fluctuates between cold and hot, giving very little comfort to those here.

The end of the journey around the twisting path will bring the attendees to a throne where an oni lord sits. Lesser oni will surround the attendee while the oni lord promises power and riches if they are willing to pay the price with their souls. Ambient whispers will be played in the background to tempt the attendees to this offer of power but ultimately the choice is theirs. This will leave the attendee to select one of two choices:
  • Refuse - Attendees may roll Etiquette/Awareness at TN20 to refuse the offer without angering the oni, or roll Lore: Shadowlands/Intelligence at TN10 to discern the oni and his true intentions. A successful roll will earn 1 Realm Point with an additional Realm Point for each successful Raise called. In the case of either success or failure, the attendee is ejected from Jigoku and sent on their way.
  • Accept - Those who accept the oni lord's offer must give up 2 Realm Points. Those who do not have enough Realm Points when participating in this event are put at -3 Realm Points instead for their current total moving forward in the event. Attendees roll 1d8-2 and gain that many Realm Points from their pact with the wretched oni lord, this can cause the attendee to lose further Realm Points.
If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Jigoku however, they can only choose the option to Accept.

Sakkaku - Realm of Mischief
Attendees will immediately find themselves in a distorted space with the use of smoke, mirrors, and kami-generated projected illusions. There are no certain direction attendees can go as they traverse through this engineered funhouse, passing through a maze of mirror screens, twisting floors, and constantly shifting doorways. The convincing projection of a denizen of Sakkaku will occasionally appear in front of attendees before blinking out of sight, making it almost seem like it was only a trick of the light.

During the dizzying adventure through the Realm of Mischief, attendees will find themselves with a random encounter where they will have to test themselves against one of the denizens of Sakkaku. To determine their encounter, roll a 1d4. The result will the corresponding encounter.
  1. Mischievous Mujina - A group of mujina will plague the attendee during their stay here, often giving them false advice and changing the entrance before them to send them on a circular path. Attendees may attempt to see through their tricks with an Investigation (Notice)/Perception check at TN15 or attempt to scare them off with an Intimidation(Bullying)/Willpower check at TN20. A successful roll will earn 1 Realm Point with an additional Realm Point for each successful Raise called.
  2. Ornery Orochi - A fearsome Orochi guards the way out of the realm. While it has endured years of trickery putting up with the other denizens, deception and mischief are the best answers against the creature. Attendees may either make a Stealth(Sneaking)/Agility or Sincerity (Deceit)/Awareness check at TN20. A successful roll will earn 1 Realm Point with an additional Realm Point for each successful Raise called.
  3. Konfounding Kenku - A Kenku approaches the attendees with some riddles and enigmas drawn from its journey throughout the spirit realms. Those wanting to decipher the riddles will need to make either a Lore: Theology/Intelligence or Lore: Spirit Realms/Intelligence check at TN15. A successful roll will earn 1 Realm Point with an additional Realm Point for each successful Raise called.
  4. Pekkle's Proposition - A strange clone of the attendees appears before them but certain subtle details about them are missing, creating a rather unsettling uncanny valley about them. The young pekkle has taken a great interest in them, wanting to replicate their form convincingly to become more human. If the attendee attempts to aid them to complete their appearance, the pekkle will thank them and grant them safe passage through the realm, giving the attendee 3 Realm Points for their help. If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Sakkaku however, has no choice to help and will lose 3 Realm Points for the Pekkle's Proposition.
Toshigoku - Realm of Slaughter
The spirit realm of Toshigoku is represented as a warzone that seems reminiscent of feudal Rokugan in the history records. The foreground of the area features a ruined battlement of a kyuden, smashed through with siege weapons. There is a wall that encircles an area that serves as an arena with banners, weapons, and debris strewn about the muddy-textured floors. Both sides seem to be locked into an eternal war. A sinister red haze that seems to colour the mood with plenty of sweltering heat is piped into this portion of the expo.

Visitors of this realm may participate in this eternal war with their fellow attendees or the volunteers dressed as the cursed soldiers of the realm. Each attendee is given a foam or holographic melee weapon that deals no real damage and fight for either the silver or gold army in this war. Attendees will make three skill checks with Melee Weapon Skill/Agility at TN20, each successful roll will net them one Realm Point. Raises called here will have no effect on earning additional points.

Bonuses that affect the first round of combat only count to the first roll. This can be considered attack rolls against an opponent with 2.5 Honour. There are no initiative values for either combatant as this is a constant melee with no formal start or end. Any further questions should be asked in the corresponding Q&A thread, please.

If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Toshigoku, they will gain the Fatigued condition at the start of the event regardless of their success for their overzealous participation as they exert themselves. This condition lasts until the attendee has a moment to rest.
  • There is Only War
Attendees who rolled successfully three times will find themselves still standing at the end of the battle and locked in conflict as another round of participants file in to participate. They will make three separate skill checks with the same skill used previously at TN25, TN30, and TN35. For each successful roll, they will earn one Realm Point. Again, raises called here will have no effect on earning additional points. The affair is a gruelling challenge and participants here will have the Fatigued status for the rest of the day after all rolls for this portion are done.
Yume-Do - Realm of Dreams
The realm of dreams at the expo act as a central hub which is appropriate considering Yume-Do's interactive proximity with many realms. This portion of the expo takes the decor from the various neighbouring 'realms' at the leading entrance before they are slowly faded out into an open space with several hanging translucent curtains and veils with soft lighting. Soothing and abstract ambient sounds fill the space to give the space an ethereal mood. Attendees traversing through this realm happen into pockets of space hosting either abstract art pieces, an artisan booth, or merely a comfortable place to sit (and potentially nap).

While there can be a few stalls and booths found throughout the other realms, Yume-Do is where most of the booths dedicated to custom artistry and creative works are found. Much like Ryoko in the past, locals and guests are invited to set up their own booth where they can share their creative work with the public in a casual fashion. Often, various wares and replicas are put up for sale or given out by each corresponding booth to further spread the word of their work.

Attendees may choose to visit Yume-do multiple times to perform different activities. Each time, they may choose one of the following that they haven’t attempted before.
  • Showcase - Following in the spirit of Ryoko, attendees can choose to book a table or booth to host their own artwork or creations to the public. The amount of attention their booth receives depends on a number of uncertain factors that affect how much their work can endear, inspire, or strike a quick fancy. Attendees may make either a Crafting or Artisan skill check at TN20 and earn 1 Realm Point on a successful roll. Each successful two raises called here will earn an additional 3 Realm Points.
  • Sales - Attendees with their own table or booth can prioritize commerce over artistry, which often involves getting their or an associate's creation of choice produced in large quantities to be sold at a low cost to attendees. The participants can choose to make a Commerce/Perception skill check at TN15 to earn 1 Realm Point on a successful roll. Each successful raise called here will earn the attendee 1 Bu in profits.
  • Relax - Conventions can be both fun and exhausting experiences without a break in between. Attendees are more than welcome to relax at one of the many comfortable "Dream" rest areas, which offer complimentary tea service and snacks. This will recover 2 Void Points without rolling, the Void Points gained here must be used for the event or are lost. If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Yume-Do however, they will gain no void from the Relax option.
Meido - Realm of the Dead
Meido is represented as a place devoid of colour, all things here are often a shade of grey to make the decor bland and emotionless. A pervasive mist engulfs the area with flickering outlines of people moving about the floor without a certain direction but slowly wandering their way toward the foggy outline of a grand palace in the distance, likely where they will finally receive judgment and move on from this featureless purgatory.

Attendees wading through the mist will find an open theatre with standing space only where various movies are playing. Many of these movies are several centuries old but there are some newer movies that are given the greyscale treatment to make them appear older than they actually are. There is no certain theme about these movies but they seem to easily spark scathing discussion and snide critique.

The most prominent feature is a very recent horror/action movie called The Prettiest of Them All, starring Bayushi Mariko and Shosuro Takumi. The plot seems to revolve around a Crab kyuden that is hosting a marriage between the heir and a partner of the Unicorn Clan but finds itself targeted by a horde of Shadowlands monsters when an oni jealously wants the heir all to herself. The main characters are a Mirumoto samurai (played by Takumi) who fights through the hordes with ease while a helpless Doji maiden (played by Mariko) clings to his side, often stumbling into trouble at every opportunity she gets. The movie has drawn some unexpected attention despite its limited release due to its low budget, lazy direction, and its shockingly tone-deaf writing.

Attendees may make a Games: Sadane/Awareness check at TN20 to either critique the movie or purposely use its laughable nature to talk about the other participants. Alternatively, a Sincerity/Awareness check at TN25 can be made instead to attempt to pick out a few positive aspects of the film (however few and unlikely there are). Attendees gain 1 Realm Point for a successful roll and an additional 1 Realm Point for each successful raise called.

If the visitor has Cursed by the Realm: Meido, they will find themselves wandering the halls aimlessly in a daze, resulting in a -1k0 to rolls done here.

Attendee Ranks
At the conclusion of the attendee's time at the Realm Con, their total amount of Realm Points will be tallied up as an indicator of the knowledge and experience they've accumulated during their journey through the spirit realms.

3-5 Realm Points, Novice: The attendee is given the novice stamp on their passport upon their return to the Realm of Mortals and granted the rank of 'Novice'. Their venture into the realms has likely been shaky but they show some potential. Additionally, the character gains +0.1 glory.

6+ Realm Points, Veteran: The attendee is given the veteran stamp on their passport upon their return to the Realm of Mortals and granted the rank of 'Veteran'. They have shown a lot of natural aptitude in traversing the realms and might even have been a denizen of the realms in a previous lifetime. Additionally, the character gains +0.3 glory and are gifted with a Kazuya the Kitsune Traveller plushie!

Knowing that he likely has greater challenges ahead Dai does not put much effort or exertion into the expo's challenges with the expected result. That said he still enjoys his time among the realms.

Realm Expo... Was this another one of those places where people dressed in short skirts and pretended to be starlight miko crusaders? On initial inspection it seemed like that was not the case, and further investigation proved to reveal the same. Still, he was committed now and so might as well try and enjoy himself. Grabbing a couple bags of the Gummy Orochi's he started his way through the realms, or at least as many as he could see.

The inner Sanctum didn't seem to be the most popular path, but it was the supposedly the scariest and thus it was the one Jun would contend with. Popping a couple gummy orochi's in his mouth he stepped inside. It was fairly scary he'd have to admit, but every spending so much time staring into the endless void of space, maybe the firefly was a bit desensitized? It was hard to say.

The Gummy Orochi's seemed to predict his fate as he stepped into the realm of Sakkaku and nearly came face to face with an Orochi in the flesh? Or hologram it was kind of hard to tell. And he decided it best not to snack on the gummy version of this places guardian as he snuck past. Which most could agree was probably wise.

The gummies had to go away as he entered Toshigoku though and picked up a Holo-Katana and went to battle. Things went well for him there as he waded through the fake battle emerging victorious at the end to only be greeted with another wave of enemies. And while things went well at first, two rounds of battle were a bit much for Jun and at the end on the second round he was vanquished and more than a little tired.

by Susumu Yakumo
Of course, Yakumo had to go the Jigoku-part. It was practically a big neon sign that said "Spider Must Go here", she felt like. Just to make a show that of course they'd refuse evil. The oni wasn't terribly impressed with her efforts and sent her on her way. No Gold Star-stamp.

Next, the randomness of Sakkaku was tempting, and as she stepped in, she found herself overwhelmed by mischievous mujina! Somehow, the recent odd happenings had made her alert enough to see through their trickery, and thus her passport got a Gold Star. ⭐

Having time to visit one more realm, Yakumo decided on Meido. For her there was almost a pull in that direction to go there, maybe something the hauntings were saying to her.

Much to her dismay though, Meido featured some lame movie, and being trained specifically to critique art, she expressed it. "Ah yes, Bayushi Mariko is so amazing, I am a big fan of all of her hit movie." She punctuated that she did in fact mean singular. "This movie overall ranks so low, it puts the bottom in lobottomy. I mean sure, they cast Shosuro Takumi, but when I see Takumi-san in a movie, so many questions come to mind... questions like why? For what? And..." she shrugged, "honestly?"

Quality Reading of Art. Three Gold Stars. ⭐⭐⭐

by Kitsu Kanna
Kanna was maybe one of the few people disappointed this wasn't anymore a conference about the realms since, you know, Kitsu.

Still, this was a good opportunity to get a (very approximate) taste of a "Crab's life".

Today, she had learned that laughing at the face of incorporeal spirits trying their best to look menacing worked well, but that attempting the same strategy against a far more corporeal oni might end up with her thrown away like a rag doll into the nearest realm where she would wander aimlessly until she agreed to help a totally not shady shapeshifter spirit.

Well, she hadn't given the spirit her true name, instead telling it she was called Kannanai, so, according to legends, such a pact should only moderately bite her in the posterior. Supposedly.

Note to self: Make sure to have an alibi at any time in the next 72 hours. Just in case.

Well. This was interesting.

Rei found himself wandering more or less at random, stopping into this hall, or that hall. Perhaps that was how he ended up wandering through a maze. Long Hare legs managed to get through it fairly quickly. An Orochi was a clever foe, but Rei had three years of experience with Scorpion. It was easy enough to come up with trickery of his own.

Next, he found himself facing an Oni. Rei at least knew better than to take its deal, even as a joke. But he didn't manage to refuse very politely. He left in a hurry, finding himself in gaki-do.

He took a step in... and found himself leaving almost as quickly.

Why was he ending up in all these terrible places? It seemed to speak to bad decision making on his part...

by Susumu Sumiko
An expo based on spirit realms?

Sumiko was all over this! She found the whole convention incredibly exciting, if a little unrealistic, but it was the closest the small Spider was going to get right now to walking through the realms. She wanted to visit them all, but was told only 3?

Tempering her excitement, she took the first path. Finding herself face to face with a big scary Orochi that looked almost realistic! It presented her with questions, trying to confuse and trick her, and she answered the questions with answers presented so well even the Orochi was confused they were true.

One for one, and so far slightly unimpressed. The Orochi wasn't nearly realistic enough!

The next path was through Meido, and she was excited to see what she might face here. Would she receive judgement, some test to prove she deserve to go to the heavens instead of one of the evil realms?

...Nope, it was films. Very old films, with one specific very new and badly written film. Still, the plot was amusing and she managed to point out some clever parts in an otherwise terrible film. Still, she was happy to move on.

Jigoku. This one had to be good right? It was made for Spider after all! The screams were realistic enough to scare her slightly, and when she came face to face with a large Oni lord offering her deals it seemed almost real! The only problem is Sumiko was too knowledgeable on this subject, and was quick to locate the intentions and thus refuse the offer. It was almost immersion breaking, and the poor soul playing the Oni had received a lesson they did not really want to learn.

Once she left she was presented with a prize...A plushie!

This was the best convention ever. Plushies!

Tsuyo had been pleased that her stay on World of Dreams would cross the date for the expo. While most of the academic elements had been stripped from the event, it was almost more useful from her standpoint to immerse herself in the popular renditions and understanding of the realms. Sure she could--and did--sprinkle obsolete symbols into her work, but having a feel for what would speak to a modern audience was invaluable for some artistic decisions. The added chance to display her own work was irresistable.

She had no strong draw to any realms save Yume-do and considered chosing at random, then smiled to herself and joined the throng filtering into Sakkaku, the most random of realms by nature. The mirrors and illusions were skillfully done, and she made a few notes on her densai to contact the expo organizers to see about talking to their tech team. She was distracted enough by those thoughts that the volunteer Kenku approaching took her completely off guard with riddles that were far harder to see through than the illusions. She took the cawing scolding with a laugh as she clomped at some speed away from the 'angry' spirit.

The rocky exterior of Jigoku attracted the Firefly who was already missing the close confines of her installment work. The cramped path was comfortable rather than claustrophobic, and the oni displays were met with an appraising eye, mostly critical in this case. Of course they were intending to be heavy-handed here, so she really couldn't be too hard on the crew. After all, the oni lord was really quite well done...just unreal enough to not seem blasphemous, and the quiet whispers were a cleverly done distraction. She could pick out a few almost rote phrases a trained courtier would be likely to use...twisted to agree rather than to slip away. Easy enough for someone overstimulated by the exhibits and overtired from the days of events to slip.

Tsuyo didn't, however. "Sorry, sorry, my soul's been claimed already, let me fetch her and you can duel, ok? It'll take a bit though. Maybe a lifetime to get back here, you know how it is..." She hurried on her way to something resembling lunch before heading to Yume-do for her scheduled slot in the showcase.

Speed-sculpting. In normal gravity. To be possible at all, she was working with a 7 foot tall lump of clay, a collection of garden implements, and a small set of carving tools. It was a blessing to fall into that space of focus, scooping out the rough shape with a trowel before roughing out the details. Slowly a winding procession up a mountain took place with a theme appropriate to the expo with oni leering from caves at the bottom, to hints of divinity just out of sight at the top. In a nod to the locale, local fauna peeked out along the portion of the path depicting Chikushudo. And if Ume was the inspiration for one of the spine drakes, it was also obvious that the curled up kitty was her usual Maru-cat.

By the time she finished, a small crowd had gathered and she was head to toe covered in clay. She did wipe the worst of it off her hands and head, but was going to look a bit messy for the remainder of the expo.

"Hmmm..." Osamu nods to himself. "Let's get the randomness out of the way first. Sakkaku it is"

Paths diverge and twist, and Osamu finds himself facing a kenku.

"If a tree falls in a forest, and no man is around, how do you know it makes a sound?"

"Why of course. We have holovids of this now"

The kenku blinks. "What's a holovid?"

~

The Jigoku was probably meant to be more impressive.

"COME I WILL OFFER YOU GREAT POWER AND WEALTH...JUST AT THE COST OF YOUR SOUL!"

"Oh! I remember this one! Is the catch that I can't take it with me when I leave?"

"...WHAT?"

"Or that it fades when I leave? Or that when I go back I'm in a timeline where the resource you offer now has no monetary value?"

There is a pause, and the oni beckons for a scribe. "GO ON..."

~

Osamu presents his passport. "My, those realms were quite fun"

The Detective and Kiyoshi entered the expo full of anticipation and excitement. Kiyoshi had a great interest in the Spirit Realms, even if he had never taken the time to truly study them. The Detective had a great interest in expo food.

Eagerly, he began to explore the realm section, beginning with the the Realm he was most connected to, the Realm of Animals.

The Kitsune was immediately pleased with what he saw, especially with the care given to the animals. Not wishing to risk disturbing things too much, Kiyoshi checked his densai and called on the spirits of water to guard him from misfortune. His concern was unnecessary, however, as he and the Detective had a pleasant time playing with the animals and watching the ceremony.

After leaving Chikushudo behind, the Fox had plans to visit every other realm section, save for one. Yet, as he found himself surrounded by confusing mists, apparitions and shifting paths, he quickly realized he had wandered right into it. This was Sakkaku.

With a sigh, he asked the water kami to again protect him from misfortunes as figures approached him. The offered assistance and provided directions and suggestions. They seemed sincere, but Kiyoshi could see through their mischief, having experienced so much in the past. Taking the Detective by the paw, he chose his own way and eventually left all the tricksters behind without incident.

Only once he was given approval did he proceed.

The booth had a small pen, wherein Kiyoshi could guide visitors in close interaction with an animal of their choice from the Chikushudo section of the expo. The shugenja would Summon an animal of the visitor's choosing, if one was not already present in the pen.

by Kuni Koyuki
Entering into the realm of Jigoku, Koyuki ducks under and into the cavern pathway. Taking a moment to get her bearings around before moving forward. Hearing that constant wailing from deeper down the path. It was kinda cute, in a way, how it was all put together. Moving with some familiarity through the cramped conditions creating difficult terrain. Koyuki would note the various actors, and the oni they represented as well as those that were simply projections. Gauging the accuracy of them all as much as she could recall, as many as she'd learned of it was not like she personally saw every possible iteration. Yet, she moves through with intent and purpose until she finally winds her way around to the end of the path and comes upon the oni lord. At first, she doesn't get a good look of him before the others began surrounding her. Glancing over her shoulder with an unease about it she smiles a bit, awkwardly, and starts fiddling with the edge of her sleeve. That was when the booming voice of the oni-lord made his appeal.

Standing tall, he walks out in a large and impressive costume with a booming voice aided by some effect. What he said to her was surely some offer, as she later found out. However it was not one she manages to focus on as she can only look at his hand, and then his arm, and then the construction of his face following the details of it as the idea of identifying him slowly but surely backfires. When his fist raises Koyuki's eyes shut, and she sees that towering face looking back down at her with single-minded intent. Tats calls out, screaming a battlecry and- she was back, an acidic pit resting in her stomach and sweat quickly coating her body. All those in the room looked to her for an answer. Barely muttering out, "I- I don't know," she quickly makes her way out of the grouping mostly surrounding her and gets outside, and away from view.

It was time for a bathroom break.

Perhaps, one might say, that Koyuki was a glutton for punishment. However, Koyuki would note that she doesn't have any personal negative experience with the realm of Gaki-do and to shove off. Of course, that conversation would have required someone to know more about Koyuki's past and only one person in all of the Empire did, while only one other was allowed such access. So, it was a pretty small pool of potential folk.

Credit due, Koyuki manages through the inner sanctum. Avoiding what fears and frights she crosses paths with all the way through. Blazing a path as true as the truest of arrows as she pushes through that most direct path. Scare actors jump out at her with grotesque roars, holo-projections tempt her toward the edge with eerie lighting effects, and the constant sound of the hungry dead hunting her at every corner. None of these manage to give Koyuki a fright the whole way through. It was impressive, and she left quite a few folk impressed in her wake. Right at the final hurdle, the exit door, she makes for her exit as a horrified green ghosts expression pops right up in front of her with a thunderous cracking sound of metal springs.

"Fuck me," Koyuki mumbles under her breath, heart racing a bit as she slowly realizes she jumped. One of the nearby scare actors chuckling a little at the response it got out of her but quickly averting their gaze and turning back to their task. Welp, there went that prize.

Which, was about the way the afternoon tallied out for Koyuki by the end. Moving through the lush and welcoming environment presented by the realm of Chikushudo she moves with intent and purpose. Making her way through adorable animals, and greenery to finally find the spot of her final destination. That wedding of the two kitsune, and all she had to do was huddle up into her little hidey hole and watch from the distance she could to receive the proof she managed to perform the task. Unfortunately, she sneezed. That was it. Nothing magical, or supernatural, or some great folly of skill. Luck was simply not on her side when her physical body decided no other time was good except for now to suddenly sneeze and blow her cover.

It was an awkward thing to walk away from, for sure.

His first voyage is into Jigoku itself, both as a mean to train more of his ancestral duty to the Empire, but also as a way to fight his own inner demons. Politely and honorably, Setsu manages to refuse all the despicable offers of power, knowing all too well the damned nature of such game. He is, then, ejected out into...

... Sakkaku, where Setsu finds himself really confused with all the riddles of the Kenku and doesn't really get a discernible and pragmatic insight of what to do with all that accumulated info.

As Setsu moves into Yume-do's workshop section, he finds himself with several tools to build the unimaginable. And so he does! Taking all his skills in metalwork and a bit more in electronic and robotics, the Kaiu takes his time to nerd out into a metallic globe and a robotic seat that moves in all directions that carries two people within the globe. The internal part of the globe has several holoslates fixed one at the side of the other providing a full 3D imagery. These holoslates then activate in several random patterns with visuals that form and escalate according to the sounds being emitted by the pair within, as the seats have microphones available. Additionally, Setsu imbues the globe with a karaoke set that provides basic instrumental playbacks of the chosen music and the lyrics displayed in a projection facing the front of the seat.

Tenma knew relatively little about the spirit realms... which was all the more reason to learn. She decided to visit the areas for Jigoku, Gaki-do, and Chikushudo, all of which proved to be very interesting. Still, she wasn't sure how much she learned... maybe it was because she'd gone through them as an onlooker, seeking to see things rather than taking any big risks by interacting or such. But to be fair, it'd all been smoke and mirrors, so she'd reacted appropriately she thought.

Fun, fun, fun!

This is what work should always be like! For the courtiers, at least.

Bayushi Senshuken spends some time in the realm of animals hidden behind a bush while a wedding ritual is taking place. Still as a tree trunk and cunning as a fox, no one notices the Bayushi!

The realm of Evil comes next.

"No, Oni san. That is quite an offer, but it is certainly not a gift." A pair of extra hands would be quite handy, in fact. "Please, don't insult my lady. If she really wanted me to have two extra hands, she would have given me a pair."

Aaaand things were going pretty great till she chooses to praise Bayushi Mariko's acting in Meido. A breath. A second breath, deeper this time. And a third one. Nope. She's a pretty good liar, but there are limitations in how much even a Bayushi courtier can lie.

Hinata, in a frilled blue and white mini dress with the usual accompanying blue beret and thigh highs, was of course drawn to the Expo. It had lots of people, and fun, and maybe food stalls!

He began with Chikushudo and being his usual self began to get overexcited.

"Oh look at all the cuties. They're all so lovely. IT WIGGLED IT'S EARS!!!!!!!"

After calming down a little, he made friends with a lil furry pig/fox/raccoon-like animal and happily followed it around for a bit, which got him a prime position to watch the traditional marriage and maybe cry a lil bit bit about how beautiful it all was, and how the grooms so fully deserved to be together.

Next was the serene world of Yume-do and his random path brought him to a room of vases and cut flowers. Oh, he loved flower arranging!

"So that goes there, and that goes here and that . . . oh that looks like one of the flowers in that picture in Manual-san and . . . OWW . . . it has thorns. Ouchie!"

So once again Manual-san, despite not actually appearing in this post, managed to thwart Hinata's aims.

Sucking on his pricked finger, Hinata traipsed off into the world of Sakkaku which took mere seconds to absolutely confuse Hinata with the smoke and the mirrors and the distracting illusions that he nearly walked straight into Not-Quite-Hinata-san. He stared at his Pekkle self for a moment . . .

"OH WOW! You're just like me!!! Oh wait no, your socks are way too short. That's far too much leg for Absolute Territory, you need to pull them up, and here! Let me help you with your make up. You need the same shade of eye liner I use and to brush your hair just a bit to the other side. Yeah like that! Awesome!!!"

Imagine a world with two Hinatas . . . . . . . . . . I AM SO SORRY!!!!!

Yuji had promised Ichiko he would take her to Realm Expo this year. The Susumu courtier traveled through the realms with the joy of his life. The young girl holding her father's hand as they moved from place to place.

The pair had quite the laugh as they moved through Jigoku together, feeling quite at home, and with the knowledge of what would truly be their blessing many years from now. As they approached the Oni lord, who beckoned for their souls for untold power.

"My liege," the Courtier started, as he and his daughter prostrated themselves, "while our souls would be bound to you, at this time, we cannot offer them. We have much work to accomplish here." Ichiko giggling with her face behind the sleeve of her kimono the entire time. Politely refusing the offer without any concern.

"Papa, papa! I wanna visit Gaki-Do! I started reading about Shiragiku, and want to see what it's all about." Ichiko tugged on her father's sleeve. The gaunt serpent looked down to her.

"Should we... just go to the courtyard?" He asked. Ichiko shook her head, her hair bobbing as she had asked her mother to put her hair in the oiran style, with all the hair pins. "How about the hallway, does that seem too scary?" Again the young one shook her head.

Looking then, he nodded. "To the Inner Sanctum then." Ichiko nodded, smiling brightly.

They weren't sure who screamed louder when the frights happened. Ichiko, or her father.

Finally, Sakkaku. Perhaps it was fate. Perhaps it was the strength of that Susumu blood and his own blessings, but the father/daughter pair found themselves before the ornery orochi. The worm tongued Yuji easily passed, Ichiko now hoisted on his shoulders.

At the end, their passport stamped as Veterans of the realms. But most importantly, Ichiko tightly hugged her brand new Kazuya the Kitsune Traveller plush!

by Soshi Kazumi
Kazumi decided to enjoy a bit of fun at the expo before the concert later that night, Kazumi made a habit of going to the expo every year when they had the free time to do so.

Starting out the weding in chikushido was a wonderful affair, beautiful and a fine celebration of union. Kazumi was a shadow by a tree none of the animals, and likely most of the humans, were hardly aware of the Soshi's slender profile.

A romp through Jogoku was next on the list an interesting exhibit and one Kazumi had passed on most years. It had a vibe they weren't always looking for but Kazumi figured it was time to at least check it out. The theatrics were a bit over the top for their taste and at the end Kazumi was exceedingly gracious with their refusal to accept the Oni's offer figuring getting some points was better than a gamble.

as Kazumi wandered along they decided a jaunt through Sakkaku would make for a good cap on the day. The twisted mirrors and smoke made for a fun and confusing time. Eventually they came to an exit guarded by an Orochi. Kazumi was a little too cocky about their skill in evading the creature's notice. Unfortunately when they were just about out Kazumi kicked a pebble and made just enough noise that the guard caught Kazumi and they were awarded no points.

Sakura wondered at the realm Expo. "Oh look, another famous Asahina Hinata." She said out loud with a smile.

Time to explore!

First off, for...Gaki-Do. Gaki-Do was a bugbear for Sakura (who had no idea what a bugbear actually was), so she decided to tackle it first. A shiver ran through her spine, but she decided to stick to the halls, to the sidelines. Despite a few scares, she managed to get out. Maybe Gaki-Do isn't that bad.

Next up, she visited Sakkaku, only to be met by...A MISCHIEVOUS MUJINA! Oh no!

Luckily, Sakura was raised on the steets, so easily saw through their little tricks, and gave them a stink eye.

Finally...inspired by Kioku she decided to visit Chikushuudo. The realm was lovely and...oh, was that a wedding? Holding up her fingers to her head like bunny ears, Sakura snuck by and watched the lovely grooms wed. How lovey! Maybe she could have a wedding like that with a short, long legged woman with mysterious origins and a giant appetite. Not like she had a type, you know.

Ryuhei didn't terribly care about the goof of fan expos, but there's always a way to have fun with those. What would be the most metal way to go through it? He had to figure it out!

The domain of gaki seemed like the right way to start. Ryuhei cared not for moderation, and went straight into inner sanctum! Fortunately, neither of the 'ghosts' looked like squids. While inside, he started chanting growlingly, contributing to the terror!

This is the face that stones you cold
This is the moment that needs to breathe
These are the claws that scratch these wounds
This is the pain that never leaves
This is the tongue that whips you down
This is the burden of every man
These are the screams that pierce your skin
This is the voice of silence no more

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

This is the test of flesh and soul
This is the trap that smells so good
This is the flood that drains these eyes
These are the looks that chill to the bone
These are the fears that swing overhead
These are the weights that hold you down
This is the end that will never end
This is the voice of silence no more

Now was the time to plunge into Hell! Presented with an unspeakable oath, Ryuhei thought: it's all good fun, why not? What could possibly go wrong?!

These are the eyes that can't see me
These are the hands that drop your trust
These are the boots that kick you 'round
This is the tongue that speaks on the inside
These are the ears that ring with hate
This is the face that'll never change
This is the fist that grinds you down
This is the voice of silence no more

These are the legs in circles run
This is the beating you'll never know
These are the lips that taste no freedom
This is the feel that's not so safe
This is the face you'll never change
This is the god that ain't so pure
This is the god that is that pure
This is the voice of silence no more

How to finish it off if not with an epic slaughter, old school, old style? For Ryuhei, it would be scimitar hack&slash, murder&mayhem! MORBID VISIONS AND BESTIAL DEVASTATION! RAAAAAAUUURGHH!

Some kind of monster
Some kind of monster
Some kind of monster
This monster lives

After this, his enthusiasm for massacre lessened. Felt a bit artificial after all, and Ryuhei didn't like sweating endlessly. Still, he hacked and he slashed with some method until...

This is the cloud that swallows trust
This is the black that uncolors us
This is the face that you hide from
This is the mask that comes undone...

...Nah, enough is enough.

LA6. Expo. Toshigoku. Agility/Kenjutsu. Lesser slaughter again, It's getting repetitive. | 5k4 ⇒ 16 (TN: 20)

The whole experience? Had its ups and downs. Novice stamp?! What nonsense is this. The only stamp Ryuhei would respect would be:

 DENIZEN OF THE REALM OF METAL

But they apparently weren't creative enough to give such out.

by Yoritomo Seika
The moment she enters the exhibition center, Seika is tempted by the vendor area in the dream realm... but holds herself back with a reminder that anything she buys now, she'll have to carry around all afternoon. Nothing says 'immersion breaker' like hauling a shopping bag into the depths of the hell realm.

Instead, popping a tablet of ~Blue Tiger Blast~ Monster Mulberry gum into her mouth, she lets her natural inclination draw her into the Realm of Mischief. She's heard there's a really good orochi illusion in here, but she doesn't run into it; instead she meets a kenku, who poses Seika a series of riddles about the sun and stars, little realizing that she's trying to puzzle a Moshi student. Seika gives as good as she gets and saunters out of the hall giggling to herself.

Next is the Realm of Animals, where she's assured by a volunteer on the way in that the real live animals roaming around are all harmless herbivores and small omnivores, nothing to worry about. Seika, who has lived much of her life in space stations, oceanic worlds, and the shattered ecosystem of Irontide, isn't so sure about some of them. Rabbits and deer and those whaddayacallems with the long necks and fluffy coats--grass-mud horses, was it?--she's seen those before. But this is the first time she has met, in the flesh, a recurrent villain from that classic Mantis children's cartoon Forest Floor Friends--The Possum, hungry menace to the loyal trio of Mantis, Centipede, and Wasp!

She'd expected The Possum to be bigger, but damn, it's still pretty sinister looking. If only it hadn't snuck up behind her when she was trying to catch a glimpse of the Foxes' Wedding, she wouldn't have yelped and given the game away...

Lastly, who could possibly resist a chance to visit Jigoku? Sure, the line is long, but understandably so. Seika enjoys shivering her way through the educational display of torments of the damned, ending in a meeting with a very smooth oni... "Hey, waaaait a minute. This sounds like the same deal Kuni Kuroi took in the 12th century, and look how she ended up--goblins all over the place! Thanks but no thanks, I'm not that big of a rube." Turning up her nose--an extra challenge when the 'oni' is a good two feet taller than her on his gory throne, and she already had to look upward to talk to him--Seika turns on her heel and exits to do some shopping.
