Where she was dressed for the street, Yuji was dressed as traditionally as possible. Having reapplied his lipstick, it shined darkly.

"Bayushi-san. You played well, from what I saw." He bowed slightly to her in greeting.

Kuni Sumie

UGH! Sumie was furious at just what happened at one of her matches and it was pretty obvious on her face, despite the fact paint. Beaten by a starter deck, really? Some people might see it as a sign of a perfectly balanced card game if all decks were potentially viable even against the most tuned top-tier decks. Maybe it was a bit of bad luck and she had been drawing too many answers, not posing enough questions to her opponents? Maybe this was some inadvertent dark horse deck and she didn't plan every possibility? Or maybe she just got outplayed and should accept her loss. There were still more games to play and the qualifying bracket was X-Y.

No, it was the format that was wrong.

"Ugh, small formats are so lame! Extended Imperial has way more things going on. Or Chui multiplayer, just turn three infinite combo all day." She muttered to herself.

"Susumu sama." She offers a bow low enough for the other courtier's station. "Blessings of a thousand fortunes upon you and your family." And greets him traditionally enough to match the man's style. "I thank you quite a lot. I noticed that we faced and beat the same opponent. May I ask what are you playing?"

He smiled, moving to her side. From the sleeve of his left arm, he withdrew a fan of jet black. The Mon of his family emblazoned on it in eshin gray. Covering his face, he kept his voice low enough for her to hear.

"Nothing terribly fancy. Gossamer Dreams. It's more just a counter and milling deck. High risk, high reward. It's won a few tournaments, but I think it allows both players to have fun, and showcase skill." He looked to her. "And you?"

"Oh?" The comment piques Osamu's interest. "I have been out of the game for some time Kuni-san. I am unaware of many of the changes in Extended Imperial. What expansions had been made." The Asako seems sincere enough, hanging on in anticipation.

Well... that happened.

Still, despite losing rather badly, Rei wasn't really here to win a card game. He was here to meet people. In the absence of another sexy evening party, he was instead hanging out here.

His gaze cast curiously around, looking at the other contestants. Giving a wave to Yuji when he saw him.

She lowers her voice. "Control. Everything bowing before the sharp tongue of courtiers in fancy kimonos." She smirks behind her mask. "It's not fun for anyone but myself, but, please, don't tell people. I want to see their faces when their katana blows are stopped by... rumors." She winks playfully.

Kuni Sumie

Sumie shot a glare at the Phoenix at first but scaled her disappointment back to resting Kuni face. She let out a sigh and crossed her arms. "There are no changes in Extended Imperial and that's why it's so good. It lets you play with every set that was released in the last 100 years, post and pre-reboot, so long as it's sanctioned by the Imperial committee. That means there are no regional locks that prevent certain cards from interacting, so that opens up like a millions of archetypes and the power level is through the roof. Also, it's highly competitive and hard to get into. If you don't have any cards from your ancestors, you can forget about getting into the format! Not for noobs."

"Ahh! I see!" Osamu's eyes glitter. "The sheer number of permutations is... staggering. Intriguing! I take it from your comments that Kuni-san is a legacy player. I am a humble "f**king casual"

He leans in. "I was much fortunate in being paired against Doji-san than against Kuni-san"

He chuckled at that, leaning in conspiratorialy, "So few realize how true that is in life, Bayushi-san. A playstyle after my own heart." There was a hint of evil in his grin, enjoyment in the wink. "I promise to not tell, if you won't either. Of course if we face off in the seeding, give it all you've got."

Having defeated the Spider and advanced to the next round Katsutoshi took a break to watch the other games and hang out with the other players. He didnt recognise many of the players but threw a wave to Usagi Rei and Bayushi Senshuken.

"I would never insult you by holding back, Susumu sama." She replies with a smirk of her own. "Unless it was part of a scheme, of course. I have a feeling that you would be forgiving in such a case. And seek revenge at the same time, of course. I would appreciate it if you extended the same courtesy."

Kuni Sumie

After hearing Osamu talk more and getting a sense of his background, Sumie was getting a bit of a nerd alert. Yes, a nerd alert from someone who was deep into a children's card game. She shot him a cautious glance. "Uh, yeah, permutations and all that. I just like the format more because I get to play with my gloves off, so to speak. None of this safe design space bullshit where they're trying to limit the number of banned cards. Or banning card just because it feels bad to other players."

"You'll have to pull a scheme on me to see the extent of my mercy, Bayushi-san." Behind his glasses, there was a flash of something behind his eyes. The fan flicked slightly, pushinf some cool air near the pair.

"Don't worry. I will extend that courtesy, and I'd hope you would find enjoyment even in the demise."

by Kitsu Kanna
Sat at one of the tables of the bottom of the rooms, the ones that were now empty of tournament games after the first waves of drops, Kanna was finishing reading the extended rulebook.

Just how many keywords did this game had exactly? Did these two cards have the exact same text but totally different rulings because they entered play from two different zones? Was that 'errata' entirely replacing the effect of that card with an effect that had no resemblance whatsoever?

The rules of this game made less sense than the rules of the Rokugani language. And Rokugani had the excuse of having over three thousands years of legacy to justify its inconsistencies.
