Information Event: Sake and Skullduggery (D2, EE)

Soshi Biochemicals is releasing no fewer than three new blends of sake, all crafted from bioengineered rice cultivars developed for the very purpose, the long grains rich in both vitamins and carbohydrates, creating a variety of 'sweet and nourishing' drinks 'best served chilled' as the commercials have it. The launch event is a public occasion, with everyone welcome - as long as you are a clan samurai. With sake flowing freely and with Soshi Biochemicals having hired Yogo Tamiyo to perform, the mood is cheerful and the large hall is filled with mirthful banter, with various visiting merchant patrons seeking to figure out if they should seek to arrange a deal with the manufacturer. While the Akodo and Doji might claim the Empire is bound together by honor and traditions, the Yoritomo and Yasuki scholars would suggest that instead it is the pacts and koku that force the hand of the buke. After all, an excuse for war can always be found or fabricated, should there ever be a need for one. This means that the diplomats try to keep a close eye on whom everyone is talking to, with the flow of koku often far more telling than any public proclamations. Meanwhile, Soshi Biochemicals is more than happy to entertain a bidding contest between various merchant patrons, seeking to fill the coffers of its shareowners.

For roleplaying purposes, the three blends first offered to the public are as follows.

Dark Blossom Blend, a seishu type sake with a wonderful flowery aroma and a delicate flavor. The art of the bottle portrays black hollyhock flowers.

Red Swallow Blend, a genshu type sake with a slightly bitter taste and earthy scent. The art of the bottle shows a stylized crimson swallow.

White Rat Blend, a junmai type sake with rich and sweet flavor with no discernable scent. The art on the bottle portrays a white anthropomorphic rat holding Daikoku's hammer and sack in its paws.

Magic: Magic is not allowed unless character rolls contested Agility / Stealth (Spellcasting) against the crowd. Emphasis is needed to make the roll and only spells that last at least for an hour can be employed. Needless to say, getting caught has consequences. Soshi Shugenja school technique can be used to bypass this restriction.

Ronin: This is a high society event. Ronin cannot take part unless serving as yojimbo or avec to a clan samurai. Ronin serving as yojimbo or avec to a PC should state so in their post.

Persona non grata: A PC that brings a ronin with them will be looked with disdain and have to call a Raise for no effect on both 'Smooth sake, smooth talk' and 'Coins talk' rolls as the Scorpion patrons distrust anyone willing to openly associate with the alley wolves.

Bottoms Up!
A character may chose partake to the launch party and show that they can drink by rolling raw Stamina against TN 20. Should they succeed, they suffer no ill effect. Should they fail, they will suffer -1 penalty to Awareness for the duration of this event. This roll triggers Advantages, Techniques and Spells that help the character to resist poisons. Should the character refuse drinks, they will have to call a Raise for no effect on rolls for 'Smooth sake, smooth talk' and 'Coins talk' rolls.

'Smooth sake, smooth talk'
To appear appropriately curious without being too pushy while discussing with the Scorpion merchant patrons, character may roll Sincerity (Deceit) / Awareness or Etiquette / Awareness against TN 20. Success and each Raise grants the character a Free Raise for their 'Coins talk' roll. Characters with Contrary Disadvantage roll against TN 25 instead. This roll triggers Benten's Blessing when rolling for Etiquette / Awareness.

'Coins talk'
Character may infer a fair bit by following the flow of the koku, as long as one is savvy enough to keep track of what one has seen and heard. While chances that any deals are made during the party are low, knowing who is talking to whom allows a skilled courtier read the situation. A character may try to infer what is going on at the sake markets by rolling Courtier / Awareness or Commerce / Intelligence against TN 20. Success and each two successful Raises called grants the character's faction an Information point. Rolls are considered to be Social Skill Rolls made against Scorpion characters, but they are not considered to be Contested meaning that techniques and advantages referring to Contested Rolls do not apply. This roll triggers Benten's Blessing when rolling for Courtier / Awareness.

The Susumu was dressed in all black everything, and always attended every major social event. Easy smiles and small talk went by as he sampled the wares. He favors the Dark Blossom Blend, which seemed to compliment his perfume.

His strength of will allowed him to keep his focus and hold his drink, while he slipped little promises and words of deceit. The traditional serpent that all Susumu were known to be.

Even as deals were made, the Liar and Deceiver was ever affable, coming away with the goods for the Dark Mirror.

Inasa didn't like drinking and this was why. His head felt fuzzy, and it made it hard to follow all this talk of commerce. It wasn't even a proper thing to be discussing so blatantly anyway, and the alcohol made it hard to resist tuning it all out. Especially when the other guests were far more interesting.

Sumiko had dressed up...well, like she normally had. While many prefer the modern style, Sumiko still keeps ties to the old ways. Her black kimono was her finest one, but she still stood out less than others dressed far more fancy.

At least it seemed she was able to hold her alcohol better than her small size would have shown, and she ended up having a fascinating discussion with a Mantis about commerce, keeping the topic very much on track with a few well told 'truths' that helped her discover some very interesting information....

Most people enjoy talking about themselves. "Successful" people adore it with a passion. What good having risen to the top of the koku chain all on your own by pulling yourself by the bootstraps is if other people don't know about it? Especially less "successful" people. After all these efforts ("efforts" = "being born rich"), you deserved to be looked at with awe and envy by the average Aoi.

The difficult part wasn't getting them to open up. As soon as you lent them an ear they tried to put a lease on it.

No, the hard part was not falling asleep when faced with a pouring cascade of banality, as to not miss the lone interesting fish among the stream of nothingness.

Alcohol was the biggest frenemy here. A well-timed drop helped getting through the worst of the conversation with a smile. More and the mind wandered far away never to return before the end of the night. There was an art in dosing it right, a number of sips to take and of toasts to casually empty anywhere but inside one's body.

Thankfully, Alcohology 101 to 106 were classes she had taken at the Ikoma Academy. There were also an advanced course, 20X, and even an expert one, 30X, but those were more for... Let's say diplomats following closely the school founder philosophy of life.

Yakumo was no stranger to mingling and drinking. Though now she was without her handler, so no one to make sure that she kept herself sensibly sober...

The diva was clearly getting deep into the Dark Blossom Blend that was offered (and frequently refilled for her), though thankfully she didn't make a scene. She even managed to do what she came here to do, as she managed to play it safe just to avoid tipping her hand. And tipping over.

Whoa... that was some strong sake.

Dressed in his usual fashionable greys, a mix of modern and traditional (careful eyes would note some tailoring), Rei wandered the party in somewhat of a daze. He was used to drinking, but something about this almost sweet junmai seemed to go straight to the head. Well, and the fact that he had a few of those.

Still, just like the drunken masters of old, he managed to weave his way through conversations gathering a bit of info, here and there. Maybe I should cut back... But really, how could he stand these things if he did?

The businessman is having a hard time doing business with all the booze flowing through in this planet. Gladly the hangover from the other day actually manage to strengthen Setsu's Crab genetics. He tries out the traditional junmai as he walks around, but not before sheering a, "Hida. Kampai!" before downing the first cup.

Blessed by the Kami's protection, the Crab seems unaffected. He actually forgets to meet and greet everyone as he simply nods around waiting for someone to approach to talk about business. Something he notes down to work better in the next meet and greet.

As conversations begin, the Kaiu makes sure to take mental notes of the many details going around as people spill out not just sake to the Fortunes.

Hinata didn't usually drink much. Partly due to being quite small and easily tipsy, but mostly because Usagi Drop's! nutrition manager didn't let him.

There was no nutrition manager here, and a cute Scorpion waiter kept refilling his cup. The waiter would have to wait though, Hinata giggled at his own internal pun, there were people to talk to. Important people for important opinions.

"This needs an umbrella in it!"

"Maybe you could add plastic rainbow pangolins as a stirrer stick."

"Oh my, that tie does not go with that shirt!"

"I'm shorry, the room just span a bit . . . "

But when it came to the important part of the evening, Hinata managed to remember one of his many boyfriends worked for a Crane Sake Distributor and dropped the right name at the right time.

"No. The Detective will not be having any sake." None had actually been offered to the monkey and Kiyoshi may have come across poorly for the comment. However, it was something that needed to be made clear. The Detective did not have the Kitsune's tolerance for alcohol.

The monkey was on his best behavior, though, and the night was pleasant overall. The blends were nice and Kiyoshi wondered about the ingredients, listening to those more familiar with such things. Perhaps there was opportunity for the Fox somewhere in the process.

A corporate event with sake? So, like every Mantis corporate event? Well, except for the ones with shochu. A seasoned veteran of many such shindigs, Seika feels no need for caution... which comes back around to bite her on the backside by way of the deceptively earthy Red Swallow blend. Through the wonders of Scorpion biotech, Seika is soon much tipsier than she realizes. What a fun party this is!

Seika and her holorecorder make the rounds of the launch party like a hyperactive drunken butterfly, the sheer overskirt of her semi-casual hanfu floating out behind her. While the candid photos she's convinced are artistic genius will be revealed as a series of useless blurry blobs in the cold light of tomorrow morning, her earnest interest in the sake ("Great stuff! Tastes totally great! Are you sure it's strong enough, though? I don't feel a thing...") does effectively disarm a few wary Scorpion merchant patrons. Despite the sake clouding her wits, she's still able to pick up some interesting insights.

Tenma was no courtier; She was a magistrate. And in cases of trade negotiations and back room deals, magistrates often had a way of actually lessening discussion, unless they were known to be suitably corrupt. Which Tenma had no reputation for (yet). Not that she was entirely "on the clock" as it were, but she was still what she was.

So it was that the young woman did not drink, keeping her head clear for talking. Most of the talk went over her head frankly; None of it seemed illegal, but it was hard to tell. Numbers were thrown around, star system names were dropped, trade routes discussed... In the end, she stood out like a sore thumb, even without her red hair and eyes. Still, there was always listening, even if not much talking was going on with her. And Tenma had quite sharp (and cute) ears. So between the few people who talked to her and the general conversations going on around her, she actually learned a little bit that seemed of some help.

There were a few things working against her here.

One, was the societal unease around a Kuni. It wasn't like she was a threat, or seen as aggressive, but anyone is bound to be a little more uncomfortable around the woman who is likely constantly sizing you up if you're a threat. It's one of those pairing situations. Your trust is unexpected, and so they don't offer it in turn.

Second, she wasn't having the best day in all of her life really and that temperament was really seeping into her bones. Normally she'd do fine, a stoic neutral face could conceal many emotions and she'd mastered at least that much even if her eyes tended to betray her. This evening, though, her grimaces peaked through and her eyes narrowed frequently. All of this was because of-

Third, she was drunk. She didn't like to admit it to herself, and that worsened her mood again, but she was drunk once more. All around her the world was a hazy fog of annoying politico's and patrons talking at talk that mattered not at all. It showed on her expression with apparent ease how displeased she often was in conversations about things that, to her, mattered less than how you tied your boots.

Reki moved through the crowd. Her refusal of a drink brought a few snickering remarks over the stodgy Lions, but the Akodo held her tongue and managed to navigate the social circles well. She used to coddling the egos of a room full of senior officers, whose sheer capacity for pettiness and pointless grudges could easily match the most base of courtiers.

While not an expert on commerce, Reki knew enough about logistics...and more importantly social queues to pry some use tidbits out of the morass.
Perhaps not a bounty but every little bit helped.

To outright refuse the sake would have been too rude. And so, she chose one without even thinking on it and gulped it in one go.

People might not have liked how Yesugen looked/acted, but that was what peak performance looked like. Despite seldom partaking in alcohol, she handled the sample without any problem.

And even if she was a bit of an awkward conversation partner, at least she was polite and well-mannered. She weaved through the crowd like she would while piloting without anyone outright despising her company; even with liquor, she couldn't loosen up in the least.

It paid off in a small way; she'd need to convey the information to the embassy, maybe that Ide, and let them sift through what was useful or not.

Now this was more like it. Having missed out on the festival this was a good opportunity to mingle, overhear a bit of gossip, and taste some fine beverages!

And those beverages were fine. Really fine. A bit too fine. Once you got going it was like, with the flow. -sama. Sure I'll have another. Hmm, wait, I'll down this one so I can try that one...

Fortunately Katsutoshi was currently both i) a not-so-important MCA nobody, and ii) a rather pleasant drunk. So he managed to politely ingratiate his way through a number of very useful conversations.

Although his social skills were a little dulled by the delicious blends, his keen commercial senses were tingling. Okay maybe that was the sake too. Woo, it's spinning. Ahem. Anyway, he somehow managed to glean enough useful information from the evening to feel pretty pleased with himself.

Thanks to her commission here, Tsuyo has become somewhat familiar with the networking scene. There are always drinks, usually discreet drugs, fantastic clothes, and a horde of pretty people filing away every single tidbit of information for later use. She's always a bit of an outlier; comfortable with the scene, without being one of them...not Scorpion, or pretty, or terribly political.

But a product launch? That delves just mercantile enough for the Firefly to find herself a little more at home, and the infusion of new faces that comes with the beginning of court season is invigorating. So even a stumpy Firefly with unfashionable freckles can enjoy the new blends on offer and dig into the the conversations, filing away useful tidbits for later regarding expanding businesses that might need specialized ores, system explorations that might benefit from skilled prospectors, and which way the winds of conflict were flowing.
