Of course, everyone knew about biolab under the temple. They just didn't talk about it on account of self-preservation.

But the slicker, younger 'monks' entering through the back door were hardly inconspicuous, and when they left for their lunch break Yūrei had followed, eavesdropping on the workers at a local cafe, apparently a security door on sub level 2 kept sticking.
