[D7 LE] Information Event: Night of the Dread Pageant

[Tassu]

Night of the Dread Pageant, also known as the Monster's Ball, is one of the Seven Great Masquerades held annually on World of Dreams. While not as prestigious as the New Year's Grand Masquerade held on the first night of the year or as extravagant as the Pageant of Beasts held on the day of the summer solstice, the Night of the Dread Pageant is one of the most important social events of the winter that no diplomat can afford to miss. An entire floor at the Castle of Misty Moon is reserved for the masquerade, most of the internal walls removed to create an impression of a vast cavern, illusions crafted by the Soshi shugenja making the space feel far larger than it actually is. Mists linger on the floor while eerie will o' the wisps dance and flicker along the ceiling. The ever capricious Air kami responsible for the illusions often play with the visitors, conjuring small gusts of wind or making their masks look as if they were eerily alive - an experience some of the junior diplomats might find somewhat unsettling.

Kenning
Following age old traditions, the quests are introduced to the hosts by heralds, a small group of well groomed and polite heimin that announce the arrival of each and every participant. To maintain the illusion and to keep everyone entertained, the quests are expected to coin a kenning for themselves - a poetic name describing the character they are dressed up as. For example, a samurai clad in dark feathers and wearing an intricate bird mask might chose to be known as 'Night-clad Murder-Swallow' in an overtly elaborate effort to rephrase the simple 'Black Raven' into more poetic form. To craft themselves an exquisite epithet character must roll Awareness / Perform: Poetry or Awareness / Artisan: Poetry against TN 20. Success and each successful Raise called gives the character Attention point.

Dance Eternal
The participants are expected to mingle with each other, exchanging flirtatious compliments while trying to keep their true identity hidden as long as possible - the hosts of course know everyone present, but in spirit of the masquerade generally keep this information to themselves. Character may try to impress the hosts and earn their favor by giving a favorable impression. To achieve this, character must roll Perform: Dance / Agility or Temptation / Awareness against TN 20. Success and each successful Raise called gives the character Attention point. Using Temptation counts as using a Low Skill and comes with usual penalties. This roll counts as Opposed against Status 4 Scorpion samurai with 4 points of Social Disadvantages for purposes of Techniques and Advantages. Benten's Blessing does not apply to this roll as getting noticed in a crowd of Scorpions requires one to be somewhat coercive.

Little Lies
Yet all the attention does character little good unless they manage wrangle some gossip out of the hosts. Yet this is easier said that done as the Scorpion love half-truths and little lies, often eagerly spreading false rumors if only to see how wide they might spread. Yet, a savvy diplomat can read into the games the Scorpion play for often what remains unsaid is often just as important as all the gossip. To catch the most interesting pieces of gossip and to garner what remains unsaid, the character must present themselves as interesting as possible by rolling Courtier (Manipulation) / Awareness against TN 25. Success and each successful Raise called gives the character two Attention points. This roll counts as Opposed against Status 4 Scorpion with 4 points of Social Disadvantages for purposes of Techniques and Advantages. Benten's Blessing does not apply to the roll due to the emphasis used.


Outcome
Character with the most Attention points (ties broken the highest roll on Dance Eternal) is chose as Lord Moon's Consort and is invited to dine with Lord Magistrate on a later occasion. All characters may exchange attention points to Information with each full 3 Attention points granting the character (or their faction) an Information point.

[Yūrei]

Yūrei arrives clad in the most dread costume (for a scorpion world). She wears a white kimono with bright LEDs sewn into it that glisten brightly, shooting little rays up into the ceiling.

As she steps up to be introduced the herald asks for her nom de guerre..and she blinks.

"Sama?"
"Yes..it's umm...my name is..."
The herald clear their throat
"I am...uh..crap."
"Light Bulb?"
"Yes, Light Bulb!...Wait, light bulb?!?!" But she's a few seconds too late to stop the herald

But, despite that glittering first impression now all she has to do is wow the assembled guests with her dancing. It should be all so simple, the light bulb ch-cha. Unfortunately, the sheer power consumption of the kimono begins to generate huge amounts of heat, and the ronin has to quickly quit half way through the dance when her obi begins to smoulder.

Okay, so impression definitely made, fire mostly contained, masquerade extinguishers proving their use. Now she can simply make up for it by gossiping. She can probably even gossip about herself, poke a little fun at Light Bulb and leave with a nice juicy clutch of information.

Instead Yūrei is horrified to find all the talk is about the heroic fire extinguishing efforts of the heralds and how brave they were. Hardly salacious at all. Rather crestfallen by the whole ordeal she beats a retreat from the scene to eat away some feelings.

[Susumu Yakumo]

Up next appeared a visage in black and purple with accents of gold, with a fine mempo-like mask to add to the flare of a masquerade (and when on a Scorpion world...). In lieu of the woman's usual black gloves, they were replaced by a pair made of golden lace instead and covering her fingers were elaborate nail guards.

"Now announcing the arrival of... The Princess of Twilight."

The title fit well with her appearance, and it did draw some eyes and attention.

Now Yakumo knew she was not the best dancer. Sure she had the technical skill of it, but she lacked the physical ability to actually complement that knowledge, but she knew how to play games and make the most of it. Given her more traditional attire, she was able to entice more with the small glimpses of a wrist, or making the billowy skirts of her hanfu sweep dramatically as she moved. And with her past experiences, she had honed her ability to not only pick up interesting gossip, but to also give gossip in return without actually telling anything of substance.

[Asahina Hinata]

Couturier-sama had come through big time for Hinata. A sweeping gown of sea blues and greens, trailers and ribbons of fabric fanning out behind him as he walked like the waves rolling on a raging sea, yet the front clung to his figure like the finest of silks (which it was). The headdress was a snarling Orochi helm with dark hair glistening as if reflecting stars above.

He resisted the urge to pirouette and show off the gown as he was introduced. Luckily he'd been inspired, otherwise he would have been merely the Rampant Orochi . . . Instead the Herald announced . .

"The Stormclad Dragon of the Depths!"

When it came to the dance, he . . . flowed around the dance floor as if he owned it, having taken the Dance Eternal on face value and thought he was here to do just that.

He was so happy with himself he even managed to exchange the little lies of gossip with great abandon. Probably because he wasn't thinking about it and was just having fun.

"Crimson Mistress of Your Dreams, yes." Bayushi Senshuken announces her name to the herald which actually works out fine!

"Crimson Mistress of your Dreams." She also introduces herself around, but people don't seem to bite the bait this time over. Perhaps the wink that follows makes the introduction too forward.

At least, she has the chance to mingle and chat with a lot of people which allows her to pick up a line here, a hint there and ultimately learn a few things that will help her clan during this season.

[Kuni Koyuki]

A Kuni came next, damnable as it was to the nature of such events revealing some portion of identity that others had kept concealed. Yet, she plays still to the song that everyone else was dancing to well enough in her intent set on the evening. Arriving in flowing dress of midnight with deep purple floral accents and a mask that matches elegantly. Stepping up to be announced, she was revealed as:

"The Crepuscular Violet," perhaps not as airy as that of the other guests but for a Kuni it impressed.

However, she proved more trap than pleasure when she began to mingle among the guests. Eyes sought her, at least a few of those less daring, on her entrance and so she found herself approached. By her most unfortunate fate the individual seemed to present male. Despite her best efforts to maintain the game it ended with the delivery of the compliment, "You are such a powerful male.. man. With massive biceps."

Another, also male. "Would you care for a drink?" They accept. "I'm sure you can tell, I'm quite drunk," she said soberly. "I've had a couple to build up the nerve. I think we both know what I'm about to say." They bite the lead, flirting back hard. "I'm gay."

Not the best performance.

[Akodo Reki]

Another of the Lion arrives, or well perhaps someone who might be a Lion. Whoever it was arrived in a dress dominated with reds and yellows, these colors formed into a myriad of shapes that give the impression of a gust of wind. Among the dominate colors are spots of pinks, whites, and oddly greens. The final bit of colors are a blueish white that fringes the edges of her outfit, these colors shift as she moves...at times seeming to move further up her legs and arms only to retreat again. A matching mask frames her upper face.

The whole ensemble seemed strange, only revealing it's intent with the announcement: "She Who Precedes the Wintertide"

Unfortunately for the woman behind the costume, her grace was largely limited by the outfit. And her dance skills were not all lost that night, with the woman finding herself quickly fading into the background....

Rei was more than a bit worn out from his day. Lot of legwork, the excitement at the arcade... Rei was definitely a little subdued as he arrived at the party. He was dressed all in black, with red lining and mask. He left his hair uncovered, partially because, well, it looked good.

The hosts addressed him. What would he be called? Rei crossed his arms over his chest.

"Me? I'm Bayushi Hare-amoro." Then he did a little dance.

There was a brief silence. Someone groaned.

Rei tried. He really did. But there was just no coming back from that.

[Miya Nishida]

Amid dramatic drum rolls, a new player entered the stage of the ball! The servants announced the kenning of the with a good charge of artificial mist: "It enters the ball: 'The Last Judgment'"

Nishdia quickly set out to attack the hopeless samurai who gathered that night, hoping to get some attention... unfortunately, his costume was a bit too over the top and no one wanted to get involved with the Last Judgement. At least not in that way.

However, he was able once again to disentangle the social fabric of the evening and separate rumors from information. He played the game of the scorpions only too well and listened to the mean slander as well as the small secrets which one murmured under held out hand.

[Yoritomo Seika]

"The Pilgrim Among the Posies has arrived!" The heralds announce a figure clad in a gauzy variation of a miko's robes, her dramatically made-up features peeking though the tendrils of a bright, feathery, mask evoking flowers and leaves. The air kami follow the figure throughout the evening, tugging at her sleeves and shivering the fabric tendrils of her mask to wrap her in extra magical charisma. A wooden mendicant's ring-staff trimmed with more flowers completes the costume--and safeguards the Pilgrim's balance on the rather tall geta hidden beneath her skirts.

Despite those tall sandals, the Pilgrim glides gracefully through the twin dances of bodies and words... only the occasional mundane crack of chewing gum from behind her mask pierces the illusion of a humble flower spirit.

"Presenting, The Mourning Star!" Yuji entered the Dread Paegent, opting for an all white, well tailored kimono, accenuating his tall, gaunt form. His mask, gilded and shining, was a combination of a sun and moon. His skin was painted stark white, and instead of the usual black, his lips were something akin to the brightness of mephiston red.

While his training could allow him to be scandlously tantalizing, with the way his lips were painted, it came off as too much escandalo, and quickly gave away his idenity.

Yet when it came to actually working the people, he never lost that. And easily acquired what he needed.

[Ide Yamako]

Yamako swept in, having prepped all day for this event. Nothing was going to go wrong this time.

She wandered through the crowd, attempting to portray herself as a tempting morsel waiting for Scorpion attention. However, she really wasn't used to using her body and self that way and it didn't go entirely the way she wished.

[Hotaru Tsuyo]

After a year on the planet, Tsuyo'd grown used to the Scorpion love of costumed events, even as she found it a bit futile to disguise her limp. She made an effort though, finding a many-layered owl-spirit appropriate for the evening...if less sexy than the usual fare at these events.

"Lady Hunter in Silence," was announced with minimal notice. And while Tsuyo kept her cane beneath the heavy layers of wings and cloak, it wasn't hard to identify her limp.

She was embarrassed to realize that she'd forgotten the first rule of Scorpion masquerades--chose a mask that allows you to eat and drink. The solid face of the owl mask made no such provisions, and presaged the awkwardness that was going to loom over the entire rest of the evening. Dancing was out of the question; the mask limited vision enough that guessing others' identities was pretty hit or miss; and apparently it was hard to manage a non-awkward conversation when one is sort of hanging on the periphery without even a drink in hand for lubrication. After a few attempts to dig into conversations for useful gossip, Tsuyo gave up and found the corner of folks who really just wanted to talk about the most recent episodes of Shiro Nowhere to complain about how out of character it was for Mai to hide her involvement with the governor's son.

It was honestly the most entertaining conversation she'd had at one of these parties.

"Now announcing The Darkness That Slithers Through Dreams!" boomed the herald

Kazumi arrived in a well tailored suit of faux leather with scales patterned into it and a silk shirt with a similar effect. A golden faced wreathed in gold serpents covered Kazumi's features.

While Kazumi was dressed to kill and usually did an alright job of flirting their way around but for some reason tonight they were off their game. Maybe it was everything going on but regardless most of their lines and advances were ignored, which after all wasn't the worst thing.

But while their flirting may have been subpar Kazumi did still manage to find out a good number of things happening around the event and parsed a fair number of the lies and half truths from nuggets of usable information.

Osamu doesn't dance. He doesn't do poetry. And so, he looks terrible at this.

What he does do, on a regular basis, is rumor monger, and loves to press people for details. The evening is a tremendous bore, both for him, and for anyone with the bad luck to have him chatting them up, he Osamu walks away with a tad bit of information.

[Hitoko]

Ronin at a high society event? Well, if they're disguised well enough. And for a nerd like Hitoko, a giant box-like representation of her favorite computer design would certainly fit the bill. Sexy? No. Fancy? Uh, really no. But effective for meeting her goals? Absolutely.

"The glorious BI-7307 flip-top travel-size heavy processing unit, Bi," announced the herald with a straight face. Good heimin, Hitoko thinks as she enters, smiling behind her boxy costume, nodding the entire costume at several guests who smiled at her... unorthodox creativity.

The costume did have shortcomings, certainly in the dance and creating a tempting view categories, but Hitoko still made the effort. Just for long enough that she wasn't drawing any suspicion or negative attention.

Kiyoshi appeared without a mask, but the heavily applied makeup obscured many of his familiar features. His skin appeared as smooth and white as porcelain, while his hair was as black and wild as night. Dark robes made him appear leaner and lankier and, somehow, a bit taller.

The herald took a deep breath. "Presenting, The King of the Riddle Realms, The Lord of the Dream World, The Prince of Stories, The Monarch of the Sleeping Marches, The Dreamweaver, The Shaper of Form, The Nightmare King, The Shaper of Dreams, The Sultan of Sleep, The Great Black Fox, His Darkness, Dream of the Endless."

The dance went well. In spite of the footwear increasing his height. he remained graceful and poised. and he found a few willing to listen to his tales and tell him their own.

"The Loyal Vassal" the heralds announced the next guest. Dressed in garbed that would fit in with a samurai from the court of Iweko I, Sakura (or someone else maybe?!) was wearing clothes befitting a bushi, though white splotches and points were placed strategically in locations which would almost suggest a pattern, but one that wasn't obvious. She was also wearing a wolf mask.

She managed to draw some attention, and her movements were fluid enough to tease everything out of others, but her mind was frazzled from her time in the Desolation, it seemed, and couldn't catch onto the minute gossip of the petty nobility.
